I'm considering going back to university in order to become a nurse. I'd be a mature student after a six year career in software dev (which I despise). Tell me if I'm being an idiot or not, and if so, why? I like the prospect of helping people as a career, have helped several during medical emergencies (ODs and other assorted problems including, in one case, a stabbing) while volunteering at a homeless shelter (I'm trained in first aid), and have been consistently frustrated with my day to day work for some time now.

Just do it. Why you not nurse yet? You can always go back to your old job if you hate it or split the difference and be an informatics nurse if you cannot handle the grind
