The gimmick was funny and fresh the first few times he uploaded video but that was years ago. I haven't even looked at or thought of that channel in years but I'd imagine he's stuck doing it until it stops working because that's what the audience wants.

Trey is a guy that pretended to be a paleontologist and was pretty much the face of the horrible "i fucking love science" phase paleontology had in the mid 2010's.
At some point real paleontologists got tired of his shit and published a paper detailing all the scale impressions on T. rex and its close relatives to get him to shut the fuck up.
At first Trey tries to cope and say they are wrong but it doesn't take long until he realizes his stance is indefensible so he stops making videos about dinosaurs entirely.

I don't know anything about tierzoo. I just know I spent several years on /an/ arguing about T. rex feathers with someone who either was Trey the Explainer, or who mirrored his every argument.

These conversations were collected and forwarded to a paleontologist who had published extensively on the topic, and in response he and other colleagues put together a paper on feathers in tyrannosaurids that not coincidentally rebutted every single argument presented on /an/ over those years.

some of this discussion appears in archives, though the archives don't go back far enough to cover all of it.

Whether that anon was actually Trey or not I don't know. I believe it was based on some things he said on his channel and his arguments being an exact mirror of Trey's talking points. If so, he should be honored as he is (as far as I know) the only youtuber to ever have a full team of scientists publish a paper specifically to counter his misinformation.

I don't dislike Trey. If it was him I debated on /an/ he was generally civil. He did reach out to one of the authors of the paper before it was published, but due to embargo he didn't get a useful response. When he decided that he had been mistaken he took down a couple of his videos and apologized for being wrong. Which I thought was quite decent of him. Though perhaps necessary given the public nature of his platform.

anyways, if that was Trey on /an/ I have no reason to hate him. I think he was mistaken about some stuff but he changed his opinion when confronted with PUBLISHED information. He didn't believe me when I told him the same information for years prior, but that's to be expected on 4chan. Why should anyone believe what I say, or anyone says here?

overall he seems a very decent guy. More honest than some here.

If his standards were even remotely consistent then I could at least appreciate the gimmick more even in the face of shoddy information from outdated documentaries or his own ass. Being hyper-specialized is bad and ranks you low, unless you're hyper-specialized to be a badass ultra predator. Unless you're a predator of fish, then that's lame. Unless you're a sea snake, then you're S tier. Intelligence is highly valued and is often the deciding factor in whether or not an animal gets a decent ranking, except when it isn't. Tortoises get a middling rank for being nigh indestructible yet dim witted herbivorous tanks, (even though turtles are reasonably intelligent by reptile standards) but sauropods get S tier for the same reason. If it was just about what animals would win in a fight, then fair enough, but it's this weird inconsistent mix of combat proficiency, general survivability, and nebulous cool factor that ultimately makes the "Tier" part of TierZoo utterly meaningless since what he's ranking can easily change within the span of a single list, let alone amongst his whole catalogue.

but he also wasn't smart enough to understand stuff like statistical sampling and bootstrapping.
Someone that's taken statistics would understand how a single patch of scaled skin can give a near 90% certainty that the entire animal was scaled. Or that 13 patches of scaled skin make it pretty much impossible for feathers to have been present, even if the patches are tiny or large sections of skin are missing. Anyone doing science should automatically understand this. The odds of a random sample NOT being representative are tiny. The odds of 13 random samples not being representative are basically zero.

This was information that Larson had published in lecture, but there wasn't a citation online at the time for this. I told him to contact Larson and ask about it. He did contact Larson and asked about rex feathers, but didn't bother to ask about the skin from the Bloody Mary tyrannosaur. I brought it up repeatedly and he ignored it because he personally couldn't check the citation.

this indicates he wasn't arguing in good faith, in an attempt to learn anything. He didn't want to learn, in fact he got really pissed when he was forced to learn.

There's not even any jokes the majority of the time, it's just the most basic rundown possible of an animal with occasional mentions of other species as "builds" and video game hud elements over documentary clips, some of which aren't even relevant to the clip at hand. I watched the mollusk video and a part that stuck out to me was when the Kirby 64 hud was up on screen at one point, but it wasn't relevant and didn't do anything in relation to what the animal was doing in the clip. It's literally just there. It could have worked as a joke for the blue sea dragon where it collects the man o war's nematocysts as the spike ability, or the coconut octopus as the rock ability, but it's literally just a hud on a clip. I know he doesn't give a shit about actually learning about animals, but I have to wonder if he even gives a shit about video games either.
