If you arent already a dyed in the wool fan of MOTU you will never get it. All anyone on the outside sees are the memes. That's it. I can only liken it to living in a world where all anyone knew spiderman for were memes from the 1967 animated series. The filmation colorist responsible for that color choice was colorblind and intended for the pinks and purples to be various shades of green. This is why most filmation cartoons heavily utilize pinks and purples. They had a colorblind colorist on staff who couldnt discern between reds and greens and nobody knew, so they just went with it.

The mini-comics embraced the Conan inspiration but the runaway success of the cartoon ensured He-man would be eternally doofy. Now we cant go one single iteration without heya references.

It just proves that anon's point further, it's not just that He-Man LOOKS gay for NO REASON, it's also that he does nothing truly violent like his character design would imply.

His very concept basically is "here's a barbarian that doesn't really hurt people and mostly uses his sword as a wand", that alone is incredibly gay, without considering Adam's colors or his haircut or whatever.

Things like the 2002 show tried to course-correct some of these problems, but they never even came close to the popularity he had in the 80s, so the old show is still the main point of reference for everyone, both the audience and the creators, even above the toys and comics.

Adam and He-Man look the same because Filmation and Mattel weren't about to spend more money on a new character mold. That's the only reason why they look the same. Also Adam's vest used to be blue in the early comics but became pink because the producer of the show was colorblind and pointed out the color he wanted and no one questioned him. He wasn't told until it was way too late.

It's pretty much all because of Adam's design in the Filmation cartoon. It ruins the plausible deniability that everyone is ripped as some show of larger than life power, since Adam is not supposed to be powerful or large than life, and reframes it as everyone being ripped as if it's simply someone's preference.
Now in reality this is probably Filmation trying to accommodate for 80% of the characters needing to be represented by the same toy mold in the toyline, but it can easily read as someone behind the scenes having a "type" if you don't have that knowledge.

I'm not surprised the movie is doing bad, but I'm surprised it's on track to be "one of the biggest bombs of all time." They needed to chill with the jokes every two seconds, and some of the stuff about how only a 10 year old would use these names was cringe ("He-Man? You called yourself He-Man?" right before the end...), but for the most part it was... fine.

I suspect they would have had more success if they'd gone the route of the CGI show or Dreamworks She-Ra and made the lead a teen, and the story "lighthearted adventure (with some more serious parts)" vs. "it's a comedy, with action bits!"

This movie bombing means Warner Bros will never make a Thundercats film.
