And also keep in mind that "works out 4x a week" means practically nothing. The overwhelming majority of people who go to the gym don't know how to train seriously for gains, don't do the big scary barbells that are most efficient for muscle stimulation, don't understand programming or the concept of progressive overload, and so on. Most people go to the gym and hit a couple dumbbell and machine sets with no real intensity and just keep spinning their wheels in sub-noob-gains territory for eternity.

I think this is because he runs. I too ran and lifted 4x a week and was also fat. It was because runnign so much stressed me out and I overcompensated by eating whatever I wanted ,i.e. not a balanced diet.
