Im not seeking to build a server, I want to replace my singular 3TB harddrive I had in an external cradle for a while witha raid array because it failed and took 700GB of backups and photography data with it.
I would not be opposed to it having an internet connectivity, but primarily I want to connect it to my PC via USB. I think I would go for 3+1 or 3+2 system of 1TB drives. Ideally, it would just behave like any external harddrive.
What would be a good system to buy and what brand of HDDs should I get?
I run Linux on both my PC and laptop and I sometimes use a switch to use my setup on either of them when I'm at my desk, btw.

Is there a way to run a 4 disk RAID10 storage solution under Windows with the intention of eventually taking those disks and transferring them into a Synology NAS?

I'm currently using Windows Storage Spaces and would like an exit path out of the windows ecosystem that would allow me to use an array in the meantime.

Replace with TWO disks.
Use one like a regular disk (like you did the 3tb drive).
And have your OS do backups to the other drive.

Internal disks or usb disks, doesn't really matter except from a perspective of cleanliness (mess of wires / being able to physically move the the whole thing to another location, etc).

Lads I'm looking for intermediate/advanced ideas for the lab. Feeling very uninspired and blocked atm. I've hosted everything there is to host and adding new shit feels as trivial as adding a service in docker compose. The only thing left for me to do is actually develop software. I'm thinking maybe I should overengineer a website or something, or maybe build a sandbox for pentesting. k8s mini pc cluster perhaps? idk, what are your thoughts?

I'm about to convert an old Dell SFF desktop into a NAS using OpenMediaVault. Basically a source for streaming audio + video to TVs around the house.
I've got an old 1T HDD, and these things are limited space. Should I get a separate smaller SSD (128G) to put the OS on, rather than installing the OS on the HDD? Putting everything on HDD just seems wrong.

the current pipeline is to copy stuff into the movies and series folders and then use jellyfin on the TV (google streamer 4k) to watch stuff, and again I'm setting this up for someone else and trying to make it as seamless as possible. i know if the solution is to manually update the database this means me doing remote desktop every time

Is this overkill for a home server upgrade?
I'm currently running docker with multiple containers on a Pi 4 and while I'm not running into too many issues currently I am approaching maxxing it out. I also want to start running AI agents from the home server. Can/Should I cut any corners here?

That's not development, I'm talking about something else, as an example: here where I work the devops team develops and maintains a Slack bot that is in charge of the monthly releases which involves multiple shit into a single flow like:

I think the idea of DevOps was to marry development and operations together, so if you wrote shit, you also deployed shit. But quite honestly, having done software development and DevOps, that idea is not executed in reality. Our team had a lot less time for dev and a lot more time doing ops for all of the other development teams.

You're speccing for the AI stuff, which will dwarf anything a Pi4 could have run, so it's pointless wondering if it's overkill for what you used to do.
With that in mind the question becomes "is this a good AI rig?" and the answer to that is "depends. What AI do you want to run on it?"
"Agents" is pretty broad. Could mean any tool-calling LLM in terms of hardware requirements. Will a shitty tool-calling one work for your agent? Maybe. Depends what you intend for your agent to do. Most people don't know. You should figure out what you want it to do before you drop nearly $4,000 not including the GPU price. Also depending on your use case it's completely possible this actually won't be enough and you need even more VRAM or a completely different setup.

Are power inefficient devices just meant for the landfill? I can't justify running my 60w server 24/7 when the n100 exists

As far as I know, the only file systems that natively work in both Windows and GNU/Linux are FAT32 (not an option with it's max 4GB per file limit) and NTFS. And NTFS sucks and requires you to go back to Window$ to run chkdsk.

Only option is to run RAIDed NTFS drives in Windows: gross. Unless, you can run RAID software in Windows which operates ext4 / ZFS / whatever HDDs without using WSL. I don't use Windows. I don't have a great answer to your problem. Did you ask a search engine or duck.ai?

Prices have really went up. Could partly be a good thing, as cheap external drives aren't always trustworthy.

External 3.5" HDD:
- Now: minimum is 20 USD per terabyte (20 USD/TB for a used HDD = WTF)
- A year or two before 2026: minimum is around 15 USD per terabyte

The router seemed to stop throttling the ssh connection between computers in the LAN after I restarted wpa_supplicant, 50 minutes between kill and start:

Now it's back to saying that it will process 7.02 GiB in 43 minutes (14 times faster than the network speed before). Don't know why my router is doing this. I don't know the underlying problem or how to ultimately solve this, but I do have a solution.

ai agents don't take all that much. I threw 12GB and 6 vcpus at my Hermes and its speedy af. My cpu is same clock speed as yours and its great. Look into the Minisforum a2 it might be more up your alley and save you some $$$
