Has the rise in cost and complexity of GPUs just turned anyone else off from gaming and computing in general? The games don't even look good.

>>109055610(OP) I just hate the companies that make them. I can see spending 1500+ on a GPU but only on the basis that it's reliable and should something happen I don't feel like I have to fight just to get a replacement.
>>109055610(OP) No, because I'm not a retard. There are thousands of fantastic older games out there which are all available on PC one way or another and will run on a potato. Reject AAA goyslop and meme tracing. Return to soul.

If anything it made me appreciate older games more. Dwm.exe takes up more vram than Bioshock.exe today.

>>109055610(OP) Not really, because the games I'm playing don't require even the 3060TI I got and it only got 8gigs of vram.
>>109055733 >>109055638 These two posts summarize my take as well. People working on games used to focus on making them fun more than nowadays. They also focused on the art of it to the point where even if I can count the polygons it's still more appealing to my eyes than whatever new Unreal Engine "insane graphics" game comes out. Might just be me, but "realistic graphics" was something I never understood the desire for. Even in porn games I prefer stylized.
>>109055610(OP) Not really. All games I play don't really need a good GPU tho. I was content with my 1070gtx and the only reason I got an 3090 was because it was relatively cheap for a short while.

>>109055610(OP) Yeah. 3D overall was a cancer on the gaming industry. Back before it was perfected, it resulted in developers focusing too much on it and producing shit games that were clunky as fuck and haven't held the test of time. Meanwhile, a lot of 2D games from before that are still enjoyable.
It got much worse when they finally perfected it. Sure, there are quite a few 3D games that are among the best in history, but overall it was like the democratization of the internet. It filled the industry with normie blockbuster bullshit aimed at room temperature IQ and it keeps pulling away more and more resources from the things that matter. In gaming and elsewhere.
Reminds me about something I read a while ago about how back when Japan was closed to most international commerce and the black ships appeared, they had been spending decades perfecting the tea ceremony, then the normies appeared with their soulless advanced industry and steamrolled them (same applies to most native peoples back then). Autists just can't get a break can we.

Nobody wants to take chances on game development anymore because a AAA game costs $100M and like 6+ years to make. So when you sit and watch State of Play and SGF it's all the same 2 game ideas rehashed over and over again. None of it matters though, because if the forecasts are true and hardware costs keep rising the industry will cave in and die.

>>109056052 Japan and the indie industry proved you don't need these insane production costs to make absolute art. Same in cinema. I'm so fucking tired of everyone thinking that because capitalism managed to create a stable society it's the best we can do. It just kills society slower. We need to keep looking.
I really don't see a use case for anything faster than like a 3080ti or 6800xt. These new games look like shit and run like shit, so they have to use DLSS and whatnot to even be playable. These products are made to prop the other product up and justify prices, it's ridiculous.
And yes, i've kinda lost the spark and interest in it all. I'm still on my 5600x and 6800xt and there's no reason to upgrade, and i won't.
All conventional business knowledge comes from the industrial revolution. That era taught people to make money by using repeatable, assembly-line processes. In the information age, that model no longer fits. New products and services must be novel and different from previous ones; if they’re just copies, they quickly lose value. Because there’s little reliable repetition, it’s hard to make confident predictions or long-term investments. For example, the next blockbuster video-game genre could emerge in 1, 5, 10, or 100 years — nobody can predict exactly when.

>>109055610(OP) we hit extremely diminished returns maybe half a decade ago. maybe a decade, even they could keep making games that look like MGSV or elden ring for the rest of my life and I would be happy the problem is if developers try to target some ridiculous ray tracing level and don't even bother to implement "fake" rendering techniques. I'm ready to skip those games, but maybe it will become the norm if unreal and unity fall into that hole. we'll see. worst case scenario, I have plenty of "old" games to play
>>109056265 And many of them run like shit by virtue of being under sony's thumb and having no way to change settings. The original Hollow Knight ran at an abysmal 60fps until very recently, even for a while after Silksong was released. The input lag was very noticeable between the two. Same goes for other games, like some shmups and older emulated games. Many of these indie games also lag way behind the PC releases in terms of updates and content, look at Binding of Isaac for example, or Crusader Kings 3 missing several DLCs. Paying 1000 bucks for a PS5 pro to play bad ports of good indie games is ridiculous. The only thing the PS5 has going for it is idk graphical heft, but even that is questionable because at some point you have to ask yourself whether "photorealism" actually adds to the game, compared to stylized graphics. And we all know these photorealistic UE5 games are utter fucking slop. But if you wanna play God of Whore as some fucking wench as opposed to Kratos, be my goddamn guest. Sony cuck.

Maybe i just got old, but new big budget games don’t really grab my attention anymore. Newest ”big” game i’ve played is Space Marine II, it’s fine for the 20€ i paid for it but i can’t imagine putting more than 20-30€ on a game anymore. Switch 2 seems cool and has games that interest me, but there is no fucking way i’m paying the absurd prices they are asking.
I hope my 7900XTX never dies because i’m never ever going to buy a top tier gpu again with these prices.
Thank you for reading my blogpost.

>>109056052 >Nobody wants to take chances on game development anymore quite provably false. Companies are betting the house on their 300m game becoming an infinite money printer. A game cant cost 10m and make 15, it has to do a 10x or else its a complete flop in the eyes of shareholders. Theyre willing to lose 300m and shutter a company before they lose 5m. The AA industry being killed off is some of the worst shit to ever happen to games. i use my 6800xt almost to exclusively play indies and ps2 games. Playing urban reign as i type this and its fun, quick, challenging and has exactly 0 10 minute walking sections that i cant skip. I can download quite literally over 100 ps2 games for the same space as a single AAA and have 100x the fun, 200x the diversity in gameplay, nothing prodding me with advertisements to buy mtx. I will not touch anything thats on UE5 because until proven otherwise, i assume it just runs like fucking shit and tim is an absolute cancer on gaming in general so much so that i dont even want to pirate the shit. Until it stops raping resources and transparencies like fences and hair stop looking like razorwire im not interested. Ive also noticed that there are no hidden loading screens via walk and talk sections or riding elevators. All of the loading screens i see are lightning fast but when you hide them through animations/waiting sections, they are perma-locked to however long that takes rather than letting tech get better and loading times lessen. There are enough good games via indie and emulation that i could never buy a AAA game again in my life and be happy. The last game that i bought at full price was elden ring and to this day i still regret it.

>>109055638 Nope, better tech lets graphics programmers use less efficient and better looking methods to render a scene. In the beginning of 3d gaming, all the lighting was just Gouraud-shading with a circular dot decal underneath the player, representing a shadow. Then we got shadow maps, stencil shadows, SSAO, Global illumination and raytracing and path tracing. Gaming is literally the main motivation to develop better computer technology. It is that important
