how sturdy/flimsy are AM4 sockets? I think i possibly damaged my old MOBO by trying to clean out a bit of thermal paste from a socket with a thin metal wire. not sure if debris or paste made my CPU unstable.

That makes sense, I guess in some regard it's much easier for the consumer to drop onto pins than to drop pins into holes.

but the odd part is, the pins on this 5800XT don't look damaged at all. in fact, I'm on it right now and it passed a few hours of stress testing and I'm currently gaming. could thermal paste just fuck up instruction?

thermal paste, unless you deliberately buy conductive stuff, is electrically non-conductive by design. There's a [spoiler]LTT[/spoiler] video where they put the thermal paste under the cpu and it works just fine.
