>>18525003(OP) The title "Emperor" comes from "Imperator" which was a real title in ancient rome. During the regal period and early republic, giving a citizen "Imperium" meant investing him with powers, for example over the military or some government entity.
During the later republican period Imperator became a honorary title for military generals who led successful campaigns. His soldiers would declare him "Imperator" and the senate would give him a "triumph". A big party where he and his soldiers would ride through rome with a parade, a lorel crown and purple kingly robes. A king for a day kind of deal.
Caesar of course was an Imperator and he was so amazing he single handedly turned "the king for a day" thing into a "king for life". Well, at least if they had not stabbed him to death. But his successor Augustus continued the transformation and became the first Emperor. He never called himself "king" or something similar though. He called himself "Princeps", or "first citizen". Keeping up the pretense. He did call himself "Imperator", but it still just meant "military commander" back then. It took a few emperors until Imperator became synonymous with "absolute ruler" or "monarch".
