You can blame the American education system but all I learned about Stalin is that he was an asshole who killed more of his own civilians than Hitler did and then he said, "One death is a tragedy, one million deaths is a statistic," and he also hated the gays and Jews like Hitler did but he only fought Hitler because he had different ideals for how a country should be run. Lol.

Imagine if every person had to, after death, experience all the suffering they caused by themselves (maybe in proper fraction as for how much guilt they carry for it). For most decent people, it would be a somewhat discomforting but bearable experience, where they spend a few months being mildly inconvenienced by a guy they don't know. Maybe it only counts unforgiven suffering, in which case most people would barely suffer at all.
But for hitler and stalin, it would be millions of years of hardship, imprisonment, hunger, torture, death of loved ones... and the suffering they caused is ongoing in many ways. For every ukrainian and russian that dies in the current war, for every eastern european who suffers poverty and crime from the aftereffects of communism, stalin accrues more years of suffering. For every arab killed by jews, hitler shares a bit of guilt. They have endured maybe a millionth of the suffering they are due, and every year they accrue a thousand times the suffering they endure. It will be decades, if not centuries before that changes. That is what would be happening to hitler and stalin right now if they afterlife was just.

Yes but also I imagine during wwii when the Nazis who were largely Catholics and pagan larpers were invading and massacring people, the return of orthodox Christianity largely of which Slavs and other minorities of Europe are the adherents that it was seen as a sort of racial resistance against Hitler’s colonial policy for Russia. “He wants to destroy Russia so let’s bring back orthodoxy and tell him it cant be done.” I imagine that was a factor
