Why do Christians put so much stock into this one hallucination that this one guy allegedly had a few thousand years ago? I mean people have literally spent an unfathomable amount of time trying to decipher what the Book of Revelation really means, yet there are all kinds of other apocalyptic visions that other people have had throughout history (from Christians and non-Christians alike) and nobody considers those visions to be legitimate.

Revelation was just cryptic, rebellious propaganda to subvert Roman authority.
>>18530870(OP) If we look at the Bible from a purely Historiographical perspective and not a religious one, the Early Church was basically an overglorified book club. Revelations entered into the official Canon because it gave the Bible a cohesive narrative, beginning with the creation of the world in Genesis and logically ending with the apocalypse. I personally like to believe that John of Patmos was on drugs when he wrote Revelation and that it was the earliest piece of psychonaut literature in the western canon.

>>18530904 >the state of Rome as inherently wicked and oppressive, only worthy of resistance In this godless age, wicked anarchism such as has been promulgated for 500 years from the Anabaptists of the past to the Marxists of today is seen as the only means of opposing rulers, and if you do not deride them or their just authority, it is assumed you support them and everything they do. Not so in scripture. Scripture condemns in the sharpest terms those who disparage the lawful authority of the state, Jude 8 (which are God’s ministers, Romans 13) and commands submission to them since their authority is not from men, but from God, with the means of the conquest of the nations being not weapons of warfare (Isaiah 2:4) but prayer (1 Timothy 2) and the preaching of the gospel (Matthew 28:19). >>18530912 Enjoy Hell

But Caesar had no authority to supersede God’s own commands and criminalize the true religion. I grant he had power to do so, but power and authority are not the same thing. A robber on the highway has the power to seize people’s valuables, but no authority. Authority can only come from the institution of God, for His own purposes.

>>18531047 Your “god” Yahweh is not a real god like Zeus is. Your “god” Yahweh is Typhon, the embodiment of chaos and father of all monsters. The bible itself proves this >It claims Yahweh will try to destroy this world (Book of Revelation) >It claims Yahweh is jealous of other gods (Deuteronomy 4:24 and Joshua 24:19) >It claims Yahweh is the “destroyer of nations” (Jeremiah 4:7) There's also the fact that Chaeremon, Apion, and Manetho all linked Yahweh to Set, the Egyptian god of chaos, destruction, and foreigners, whom later Egyptians equated with Typhon. You accuse the Olympians of being “demons,” but the reality is that the only "demon" here is Yahweh whom you worship. This is why your “god” forbids images of him, because he looks like this.

Many early Christian movements did not think that Jesus was literally God, but instead an agent of God or perhaps a lesser deity. That the Son and the Father were not co-equal. Revelation was useful because it answered that question with a 'yes, Jesus is God'.
