Tbh I seriously doubt she'd let you live in the Shrine for long (I wouldn't let strangers into my house either). You'd probably have to live in the human village, but do you really need that? It would be good if you had some basic knowledge of something useful like engineering or medicine, otherwise I doubt you'd enjoy working 12 hours a day in rice fields in a world without electricity, internet, or anything else that makes the 21st century so good, without family, and perhaps without knowledge of japanese. While electricity could theoretically be obtained from kappas, and Eirin can handle medicine, it's still not the level of comfort you're used to. But I don't think winning Reimu's heart will be particularly difficult. Just come to the shrine every day and give her donations of money or food, and sooner or later she'll show interest in you. Boom, now you live with her and you have kids to feed.

That's a pessimistic (and realistic) scenario tho. You can imagine Gensokyo as a sweet anime paradise with everyone around kind to you in which you know characters and so on too, which is fine and even cooler. Personally, I'd go with kappas for the cutie Nitori and cucumbers.

Actually now that I'm thinking about it, let me add an addendum to my post here.
It'd be near-100% just from removing the threat of youkai from their daily lives. Then after explaining some conveniences like how a tractor works (since I imagine if the residents of Gensokyo pop up anywhere it'd be in rural Japan which is all untended farmland) I think it'd shoot up even higher, and finally the borderline guarentee of a variety of food would make it such a large majority it'd be a rounding error if not for named characters like Keine who may or may not want to leave for obvious haafu reasons, or more specifically Akyuu and Kosuzu due to their roles in the village. But I imagine anon's question is talking purely about the mobs.

Also, booze. Lots of different booze in the outside worlds.

Well if the question involves Reimu as part of the discussions then I imagine there's plenty of story's like that, revolving around the idea of the end of Gensokyo and potentially Reimu's attempt to stop it. I think that was CtC's thing too but it's been a long ass time since I've thought about it and it's too late at night for me to dig into it again. But if it's just strictly what the mobs would think, yeah, I don't think it's ever actually been done before. Maybe it has in some obscure fanfiction on a website or a doujin or THP. Then again, it's not really like the story could really go anywhere, because if the basis of the story is "mob's are leaving Gensokyo en-masse/all at once" then the POV would almost certainly be a mob character... making it a story about a mob character who is no longer in Gensokyo learning about modern day Japan.

So basically, about as much of a story about Touhou as your average Isekai is about Tokyo. Not really sure how it'd fly beyond a short-form format.

nta, but I think the *how* is more interesting since something like mobs leaving en-masse is an existential threat characters like the Sages, Akyuu, Keine, and anyone else who's a true believer in Gensokyo, or at the very least a youkai who doesn't want to die.
When you think about it, for people like Suika who wanted a more violant pro-youkai Gensokyo something like that is sort of a dream come true:

Of course it all depends on how you would want to write it. I think Nork/Milo has talked about such things before, but he's more interested in his original eastern european knock-off novel than Touhou itself.

Last night I was thinking about this, not your specific version of the idea though, because I do think the whole "villagers choosing if they want to leave or not" thing is a very interesting idea.
The idea that came to me was a short story that'd deal with a debate with the villagers, the named village 'hus, and possibly some other 'hus either through the ones that'd be directly responsible for said exodus being brought up in the first place. I struggle to think of a character who'd manage to do it on a large enough scale that would also want to do it in the first place, but so long as it's not Yukari it can be hashed out. The ending of the story would be as the portal opens and the group of people who are leaving look back at their village and possibly the few who remain behind, probably some hyper-conservative village elders, before they step through and the story ends.

How about Renko? She disappears from Yukari/Maribel's backstory rather conspicuously and is ideologically opposed to Maribel. You don't even have to name her, just have her be a mysterious woman with arbitrary powers that allow her to facilitate your stories with her identity as Renko only being vaguely hinted at.
I don't think it'd be a stretch to have a person who holds strong views about objectivity like Renko say something like.

I think It's comparable to a random remote African village. Yes, the people here are aware of the rest of the world and even possess some technology from there that they accidentally acquired (tho they don't really understand how it works). But how many of them would move to, let's say, New York (or any big city, just the first one I have in mind) if they were given the chance, since it would be pretty hard to integrate in it's life? I think the main problem is that since the Gensokyo villagers live by the norms and traditions of the pre-Meiji era, moving them from quiet conservative Gensokyo to modern Japan would be extremely stressful for them. Tho it, indeed, would be "safer" for them (since they don't know that youkais can't attack Human Villagers anyway)

So that's a good question. However I don't think Yukari would have let them out anyway, since their "job" here is to seccure the existence of the youkais.
