No, its extra grabbable for someone in knife range, and it gets in the way of shouldering a rifle. Plus depending on your retention its easy to fall out and lose. Also knives are like shotguns where they are overwhelmingly used as tools rather than weapons. Idk where it started, only time I've seen it done seriously was at the Iranian embassy and that was repurposed aircrew knives for cutting ziplines, and shoulder sheaths in fiction is much older than the 80s. Might have been a Vietnam thing.

Yeah it's great, then when you tread on an IED it can blow up into your neck or head and then you don't have to live without your legs and balls. Or even better on the shoulder like that it can be flung a hundred feet into the air and become a hazard for everyone behind you.

You know nothing about IEDs. Having a good cutting implement, ideally a dedicated belt cutter but atleast a knife, is the most important thing to have when your armored vehicle gets flipped around. You need to cut your belt as fast as possible to not die in a diesel fire.

My understanding is that it was specifically a pilot thing. I've also seen it as a way to have a knife on a backpack but reachable, you used to see the same thing with phone pouches but that went away with smartphones. Generally speaking any unorthodox method of carry is a way of solving a specific issue and if you're not subject to that issue then the method of carry doesn't have much value.

I wore my knife on my kevlar vest as a mounted M2 gunner. I hated shit hanging on my belt because things catch on the turret ring or are hard to access when seated. I used to do it camping after I got out because I thought it looked cool. Off-hand shoulder, obviously. Upside down or rightside up, I did them both. Upside it's easier to unsheath, but gravity tugging it down all the time means you have to make sure the strap isn't shit, and honestly it's not difficult to unsheath rightside up. I think the idea is that you can unsheath into a fighting stance in one smooth motion if it's upside down, but who really needs that kind of economy of motion? Not an M2 gunner, not a civilian camper. It was more important to me that it never accidentally fall out.
