>>25335260 All I'm saying is it's a weird way to make the point. One of her arguments is "trannies aren't women because they exhibit masculine traits," so it seems like she thinks exhibiting masculine traits is proof of someone's real gender. But here she is, exhibiting masculine traits. It's a bit like saying "Pittsburgh Steelers fans can't be trusted because they're inherently violent," winning a footrace against a Steelers fan, and then celebrating by posting a picture of yourself brandishing firearms with an angry look on your face >>25334995(OP) But to bring the discussion back to books, you can't deny Harry Potter's influence. She's one of the all-time greats for her influence alone, even though there are much, much better YA books (The Chocolate War comes to mind) than Harry Potter. Always appreciated how the series got darker as it progressed, though

Harry Potter is actually an astonishing achievement. Seven books published over ten years that tell one story with a beginning, middle, and end, and without retcons. The planning is so impressive.

Anonymous06/11/26(Thu)17:25:10

Anonymous06/11/26(Thu)18:36:08
>>25334995(OP) Kinda fucking bad, but honestly very foundational to what YA is. The whole genre is essentially just re-using the elements that gave harry potter such a stranglehold on a generation of kids: a relatable outsider kid enters into a wish-fulfilment world with some kind of clique-based categorization they have to navigate, and some kind of power or talent to daydream about, until it turns out theyre special in some way that makes them destined to defeat the big bad.
I think this also does not really redeem it. Harry Potter is ass, YA is ass, and so Harry Potter has been a great influence on a whole lot of books that made the world a worse place. And because kids feel like they should be reading these books that are for 'their age', and because 'serious' literature is not approached naturally anymore but only exists for them as boring homework, they are drawn to YA rather than any real literature they are perfectly capable of reading.

>>25335485 I dont think transgender people think 'gender is subjective,' in the sense that its just a thing you can change on a whim. Its obviously its something they struggle with a long time to transition from the one or the other.
I think defining it as a set of traits rather than unified essence you have or you dont is a useful framing. Masculine and Feminine traits exist and are often tied as much to cultural (mannerisms, dress) as biological factors (bodily appearance), both of which require effort to change but can indeed be changed. If people want to adopt different traits and then they put in a lot of effort to adopt those different traits, whats even the problem?

>>25334995(OP) I feel like it has earned its place in the upper echelons of YA...we're talking YA lit so not like it's super prestigious or a terribly high bar to clear. It's great for what it is and easy to enjoy even for people outside of the target demographic, which is about as good as you can expect from YA.
It wouldn't be so bad if they all didn't fail to jettison it as they aged. The harpies who run the world all love(d) Harry Potter and Rowling rules us through them.

>>25334995(OP) For a 7-volume series, it's remarkable consistent and satisfying in its conclusion. Rowling, unlike the majority of modern authors, never forgot that her one and only job is to tell the best story possible. Her talent and her ambition were matched and she produced something that struck a chord with kids and teens all over the world. It's hard to argue with the results.
