The first couple books are pretty fun and decent quality, but the writing goes downhill in the later books and a lot of the setups are paid off in unsatisfying ways. I enjoyed Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon more; it has the same virtues and flaws of DCC, but taken to greater extremes, and it's packed into a far more reasonable number of pages.

There's 10,000 books worth reading before you read Dungeon Crawler Carl and most people won't be able to read 2000 books in a lifetime. Even if I somehow read those 10,000 books, I think I'd rather just not read anything--I'd just stare at a blank wall for 20 hours, which is a much more fulfilling experience.

aren't the books like 6 dollars? This isn't exactly an amazon show telling you to eat the rich. Even though DCC has a joke about that exact line, which I thought was the preachiest line in all the books so far. While it does make the rich people the bad guys at first, it does make a point to state that every regular person who watched the crawl also also guilty, and lots of them also suffer consequences.

I agree that it's been done before, but it's a simple and easy bad guy for what's essentially a comedy/action sci-fi series

I for one just read it for the fun and go right over anything I feel is preachy. dinniman isn't even good at it, which is what baffles me. Like whenever there's a moment like that, it feels so midwit, so limited. But the action sequences and chaotic ideas really really shine. It's actually a very creative set of works that way and I do feel it's overall competently written.

I just worry that, since in his standalone work he released, the operation bounce house one, he's stuck. It's also sci-fi, lots of action, lots of comedy, less random and more grounded but the bad guys really are complicit and callous consumers and the evil corpos that make an evil video game that kills real people (and in both instances, the users KNOW they're killing real people).

DCC has 2 more books to go and I sincerely hope it pulls back on the anti-elite preaching. And from the very end of the last one, I think it will. The evil elites are dead and the people in control now are portrayed as sympathetic and just trying to make the best of an apocalyptic scenario.

The AI is now killing whole star systems of people, samantha is probably going to sacrifice herself to save everyone and the AI resets itself and everyone

It's fine if you haven't read much. Very hard to read this kind of thing if you've read hundreds of great works.

The first few chapters are rough.
It's like a mash-up of H2G2 and every fucking manhwa ever. And when the first few achievements start rolling in it IS bad. It gets better later.
It gets good at chapter 9, IMO.
All the books currently released are pretty good, all things considered, with books 3 and 8 being the weakest of the bunch.

I didnt like the audiobook which sounded obnoxious and "marvel" to me.

However the book when read is a bit better because you can decide your own delivery and tone of the writing.

There seems to be a massive split in fanbase one half seems to love the start and hate where the books end up going. And the other half think the start is garbage and you have to force yourself through it to get to the good part.

I only liked the first 2 books and had to drop it at the third. The gimmicks get old and the author understands that so he slowly phases them out, however he never has a good replacement for any of it and it kills the entire momentum as well as soul of the first book.

The first book also sets up a clear world,rules and trajectory of expectations for where things are going but every subsequent book just "subverts" it to the point of the things you actually expect and want to see in the next book never happening.

It's like lord of the rings but after the first book they stop caring about the ring and sauron and just ignore it so they can go hang out with the Ents for the rest of the story. It's bizarre and reads like it's written for gen Z attention span so they constantly need to switch gears and change the entire plot in an attempt to keep their attention.

It seems to have worked based on its popularity.

It's still a good palette cleanser and i recommend it. The first book picks up about 1/3rd the way in and doesn't let go.

the books are pretty good I am reading the third one right now(just started it), finished the first two fairly quickly. They are pretty fun and easy to read but do also have some nice character moments. I have never read any other litRPG series and I honestly had no idea this was one before I read it but I will say that the game elements, at least so far to me, aren't overly complicated or under complicated where they get in the way of the story. The one thing I like the least is the humor. It is very millennial "tehe so random and quirky" humor. At least from what I read this was a lot more prevalent in the first book than the second and also to be fair there is the game AI that is trying to kill them and one of the main themes is like the horror of having to participate while it is treated as a game show for entertainment. So I think you can read the millennial humor as almost self referential in way.
Noticed a lot of comments on here debating if it is "slop" and comparing it to reading more classic thought provoking literature. I personally read basically nothing but classic literature for like 2 years and felt like something more "slop" was refreshing as a sort of brain break. But I will also say the book isn't entirely "slop" and does have some interesting themes and character interactions to think about but nothing all that good. I would just read the first book it is only like 300-400 pages. If you like it start the next. Ignore the comments calling you a fag for reading something a bit retarded that is also fun. There is also a show coming out like probably end of this year so that is probably why you're hearing more about it.

the issue with litrpg audiobooks, is literally everyone glosses/skims any expositions regarding mechanics/systems. if you read some of this slop before you know that 99% of these info dumps will never matter and if it will come up later they will not so subtlety remind you about it every 10 chapters. No one ever says "man I enjoyed reading about the magic system" it's always "well that system wasn't completely retarded, and didn't actively destroy what little semblance of interesting plot/character development I could find"
