I don't get the appeal. How come G Gundam is everyone's favorite?

Watch it and find out.

>>23871565(OP) it isn't everyone's favourite, but a lot of people like it because it doesn't take itself seriously. it's WWE with mechs. everything is silly. there's a horse that pilots a unicorn mech, there's a mech that transforms into a windmill to hide amongst the windmills, egypt has a "mummy gundam" piloted by a zombie. it's just good, campy fun.

>>23871579 It takes itself deadly seriously, and that's why it's so fun. Not once does it display an ounce of self-awareness and point and laugh at the ridiculous bullshit it presents you with, it treats it all like it's supposed to be normal.

Anonymous05/19/26(Tue)12:02:41
>>23871604 i mean that the creators were obviously having fun with it and trying to make things silly. just because it is played straight does not mean it is taking itself seriously. something like nolan's batman is something that is taking a stupid concept and taking it seriously. a world where the galactic election is decided by a wrestling match between giant robots on an earth surrounded by a giant wrestling ring is absolutely not something that takes itself seriously, regardless of if the characters don't wink and nudge at the audience of ludicrous nature of things.

It's Imagawa's finger to all those edgy autists that worship overrated shit like Zeta Gundam like the best thing ever happened to mankind. And it was Tomino himself that gave him the blessing to make that, because you know, Tomino fucking hates the gundam audience. Of course it's good
>>23871604 >It takes itself deadly seriously, and that's why it's so fun. Not once does it display an ounce of self-awareness and point and laugh at the ridiculous bullshit it presents you with, it treats it all like it's supposed to be normal. Because it is normal, also normal for colonies to be shaped like your nation or as a national monument.
>>23871565(OP) I like Hong Kong martial arts movies

It's a nice little show that's definitely a fun watch but I don't think it's the best Gundam or best mech anime of this type. Still really worth a watch for...pretty much everyone IMO.
Something I think people don't mention about this show enough besides the whole "crazy premise but plays it totally straight" is that there's a really melancholic and bittersweet undercurrent to all of it. There's a good few episodes focusing on topics like sickness, aging, lost love, etc. Like Tequilla Gundam is such a goofy meme but it gets one of the most bittersweet episodes of the series with the dying childhood friend gf. If I had to describe the show in a way other than Wuxia Gundam or Super Robot Gundam, it'd probably be "Fairy Tale Gundam"
>>23875278 I don't get why the guy who made the screencap named it that way; still, Wing Gundam made its debut in G Gundam. It's the first and last time a new AU cameoed in another AU
>>23875453 I think it's kind of key to the vibe of the series though. It's very classically "romantic" in a way that plays into the fantastical elements of the series.

Anonymous05/22/26(Fri)13:01:35
>>23871604 This is correct. For some reason shit like Code Geass and Valverave skewed the meaning of >doesn't take itself seriously around these parts.

>>23875514 >>23875516 Impressive how it managed to change its color registering in the middle of battle.

>>23871604 >>23875670 Modern audiences seem to have lost sight/ forgotten the idea of 'camp' or something along the line. A lot of older movies, particularly old HK martial films tend to be very over the top and ridiculous in concept, but as said, that's just how the story's verse function and the actors, writers etc take them seriously and play it straight. It's part of the charm.

>>23871565(OP) Because it aired on Toonami in 2002 and for many basedlennials, either that or Gundam Wing was their first (and probably only) Gundam show.

I don't like G Gundam personally. It and Wing are probably the ones I enjoy the least, but Wing has a lot of great designs. G is just too silly with most for me. And it screams power of friendship and whatever. Too shounen like. Like Naruto or obcitously Dragonball. Not my thing
But /m/ hates Gundam and G Gundam is the least Gundam of any Gundam series. That's why it's so well liked here.
>>23876873 /m/ hates Gundam if only... I mean, Tomino himself hates gundam, so why shouldn't I

Anonymous05/23/26(Sat)12:51:15
>>23875425 It plays the setting straight but it also doesn't forget it's Gundam. The setting kinda sucks if you're not a Gundam Fighter or live in the Colonies

If you don't inherently get the appeal of something no amount of another person "explaining" it to you will make it click. Just move on.
>>23876873 >G Gundam is the least Gundam of any Gundam series. It's like you've never seen anything SD Gundam related or the Build series
You're not wrong though, I have zero interest in Gundam and never watched any UC Gundam

Anonymous05/23/26(Sat)16:14:50
>>23876995 SD is okay and I have seen a bit of the Build series. G Gundam just feels like it's doing too much for me. Just not my thing.

>>23879994 >Not even the Wing Gundam itself, that thing was a piece of shit. As is any machine without a primary weapon.

Anonymous05/28/26(Thu)02:02:50
>>23883353 The horrors of war are contained in an electron system that's also a planet-sized tournament, since it was the only option for putting an end to the Earth Chaos War. Future Century timeline was pretty wild before the Gundam Fight became the norm.

>>23883353 >>23883376 even just having the giant robot death match shit is STILL wrecking the environment/cities, so it's far from perfect

Anonymous05/28/26(Thu)02:14:45
>>23883353 G's general premise is that humanity has eliminated/contained the problem of war by moving the entire population to space, and every four years a combat tournament is held on Earth with the winning nation becoming the ruling nation of humanity for that term
It of course be comes clear that this isn't entirely a clean system, and there are drawbacks to it that have been overlooked that form the basis of some of the antagonists motivations
>>23883387 >>23883391 That's basically the summarized reason for Master Asia desire to end humanity because he saw the writing on the Wall and saw the major flaws in the Gundam Fight. Domon was starting to see it too, but like Amuro, he wants to put faith in humanity for future generations to find another answer then destroying the world to avoid war betwen earth and space.
