Reposting because new thread.
>>43228102 (You) >>43228141 >>43228339 (You) I switched cables back to the previous one. Cleaned the ends as best I could. I didn't clean the inside of the ports as the connectors are way back there. I tried re-reading the same tape from the other day and got I/O errors again, at exactly the same place. That would be very suspicious if the problem were the card, the cable, or even the drive. If it's failing at the same place it would suggest something's up with the tape, though the drive does not report any errors with it.
Although perhaps, if there was an issue with the card or cable during writing at this spot? But then would Linux report it as an I/O error? It seems odd. I think I will have to write a second tape and see if the same thing happens. Maybe I'll also try writing the files that it's failing at to another tape and seeing if somehow the contents have something to do with it. But I really doubt that.

I used Ponybooru as an alt for years and barely noticed much beyond the site functioning less and getting weirder. With is demise and essentially 'Nigel Farage' reveal of being the same as the other shitheaps, where shall I go? Who's the freedom of speech and art bastion who will stand by anything within accepted legal limits, including the fantasy foal stuff etc out of pure principle?

>>43229477 Another question I have: What's the deal with fiber channel and SFP? I'm trying to find a new cable to buy and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what the compatibility is between fiber channel and SFP. The cables I bought previously were explicitly advertised as for fiber channel. But will any SFP direct attach cable work? What rating do they need to have? Most are sold with base 10 speed ratings, whereas my fiber channel card is indicated to have a 16gb connection?
>>43229598 Currently, you have two choices: Twibooru for a pure pony archive, Ponerpics for a more community-focused experience with less strict rules about pony-relatedness.
>>43229860 >>43229477 You may want to move your discussion to /pts/, it's veering into way off-topic territory. This thread is not meant for tech support.

I need to get back to backing up all Catbox files linked on /mlp/... but it's getting more difficult now that Catbox is constantly shitting the bed. Unfortunately, I don't have the disk space required to back it all up right now, I'd need to hook up a different system first. And also first update my vibe coded (because I'm a codelet) script to account for every transmission error that now undoubtedly will pop up.
Anyone else already have an operation to back up Catbox links from /mlp/ underway before it will inevitably shut down?
>>43229860 That's a whole fucking can of worms. I've only used up to 8Gbps fiber channel. You can use a regular 10Gbps Ethernet SFP in place of an 8Gbps fiber channel SFP, at both ends. I do not know what the situation is for 16Gbps. However, if I recall correctly, SFP DAC cables are not "smart" in any way. They literally just directly connect some pins of the SFPs at both ends. I doubt the cable is your issue in this case though.

Why is Twibooru's featured image an image with the text "God loves you"? Aren't the owners of that site fags? That message does not apply to you.

>>43231080 I suspected it was a simple cable, but even there you can have different specs like cat 5, 6, etc for ethernet.
I doubt it's the cable as well, I think it's the card. I've had similar issues with SAS HBAs in the past. I've purchased a new one and it's on the way, but I do find it suspicious that it failed in the same place twice. So while that's on the way I'm going to write another tape see if that exhibits the same problems. Another thing I've read is that I should check dmesg for more info. I'll do that when/if I get another failure.
>>43230739 There wasn't much else going on in the thread when I started posting about it. I probably won't have too many further posts. I'm hoping I'm near the end of setting this up.

>>43231514 Well, I have written another tape and read the whole thing back without any error. This really makes me think that it was the other tape that was the problem.
However, this does raise it's own questions. The tape drive did not report a tape error. From what I read, the tape head is supposed to verify data as it writes it. If the other tape was written without any reported error but there was error in reading it back, that really brings that verification into question. I think at this point I can start actually making my tapes I should just read them back first before calling them done. At least for the first few, as this brings the time to complete a tape to 14 hours from 7.
Other notes: I do wonder if something went wrong with the other tape. When it arrived, the case was cracked even though the shrink wrap was still intact (I ordered a few singles from a couple different sellers before I made a big order from one of them). So perhaps it sustained some internal damage in shipping, even though it seemed to start out fine. That particular tape does sound nosier now and it fails at the same place every time. I will also note that this other tape I just wrote is a metal particle chemistry rather than the BaFe all the others are. So hopefully the drive doesn't have an aversion to BaFe. But I don't think so.
I'm also happy to report that drive temps are still looking good. I had the fan down at a level it was still decent to be in the room with (about 2/3 speed) and temperature is still good even after 14 hours of continuous operation. 39C.
Probably not too many more posts on this unless something else happens or more problems arise. I plan on making a printout of all my scripts to store on paper with the tapes (I'm only using tools that come included with most Linux distros). I may post that when I get it together.

>>43232302 Shrug, whatever you say. I just think open formats should be encouraged at all times, no matter if you're personally affected by the law enforcing them or not.
>>43233236 Encouraged, yes. Enforced, no. Transcoding video files is particularly troublesome because their codecs are almost universally lossy, which leads to quality degradation and increased file sizes even in an optimally designed system which Philomena most definitely isn't.
>>43234868 I don't claim to know my way around the pseudolegal restrictions that started this argument, but the fact remains that an archive should not discard the original encoding for an open format conversion. Just look at how Archive.org handles it: original formats available alongside a variety of reencodes for those who require them.

Was going through the last couple of threads and came across >>43088250 >Ponybooru updates: >>we ran out of space >>updated the vm and made more space available >>running nominal however I will need to take it down for a full reindex later. If Zizzy was really planning the purge long before his furry friend got v& why didn't he nuke lolisho then to both free up disk space and get rid of that "legal risk"?

>>43236318 I clicked the edit button. I carefully reviewed what you were talking about, there's two edits for 18 days ago, and then one 2 years ago and then it continues. So how that works is that it shows the current revision (18 days ago) the previous revision before (18 days ago) and then the one that came before (2 years ago) It shows the (2 years ago) one with the *edits*, stuff in red was removed , stuff in green was added. You can confirm this behavior by philomena by scrolling down to see the discrepency between 2 years ago and 4 years ago revisions. Can't explain it, just default behavior. The one 2 years ago revision is blank with no green or red, I think someone probably pressed edit, then save, without changing anything but not sure there.
