>>130570368 Saw some clips, it was alright. Geddy's voice was less busted than usual and the new drummer played the parts well. There isn't much to discuss really.

>>130570330(OP) You cannot deny that this is a monumentally landmark event but 30 seconds into the music it is immediately apparent she isn't a patch on The Professor. None of that Buddy Rich-type feel, swing, nor shuffle. Very technichally proficient but lacking that sublime depth and dimension. Yes, she is incorporating her style and flair into the songs, and sometimes it's pretty damn good, but she's better suited stylistically playing for Dream Theater or Maiden or something. Rush lost their poet, their philosopher, their Professor. Neil is irreplaceable. This is gynocentric frivolity. It is what it is. The only thing more alarming is Geddy's voice. Oy vey, hopefully just first show clearing of the cobwebs. Alex is fantastic as always.
>>130570330(OP) Can't really complain. Anika plays the parts well, but nobody can replace Neil. The only thing that I'm worried about is Geddy's vocals. That gave me the big oof.

>>130571419 It’s a replay of the Oasis reunion. The announcement stunned everybody and created a ton of buzz, and then when it finally started it turned out to be just fine, and the anticipation evaporated and the tour proceeded routinely from there.

>>130572813 I think his voice was better here than on the last two tours with Neil. The 10 year break really did his pipes good. They only really had like one year off from touring in the time between Snakes & Arrows and R40 and they were all decrepit messes by the end.
>>130570330(OP) Feel like a got some decent finds recently ToaPP and El Dorado. Not pictured is also an original ABWH CD from 1989 I’ve been trying to find THRAK and ELO’s Time for some time now but seemingly they just don’t exist here, so I might have to order them from discogs
>>130573850 Probably Beat or B-side of Starless if we’re going by studio albums Some live or collection albums might have some really dumb shit but overall Beat might be the most noodly or wanky with the tied to beat poetry and such
>>130573850 ConstruKtion of Light Belew was pretty far up his own arse with that one. The World's My Oyster Soup Kitchen Floor Wax Museum? Come on Adrian...
>>130574039 >>130574048 The only song I liked on that damn album was Larks pt.IV, much better compared to pt.III. Everything else felt infinished or too messy to remember, it all just melded together into a blur. Belew’s rougher singing style really rubs me the wrong way with Prozakc blues and on TPTB’s few songs I could also definitely feel Bruford and Levin absence

>>130572638 >>130572813 She's got the chops but it's definitely a different feel. It's a bit stiffer and mechanical. Still it's cute that she got a round of cheers for doing the iconic fills on Tom Sawyer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKI5vmR0LNY
only a few songs in but so far, instrumentally, it sounds great
Geddy is struggling vocally at points but overall not bad. I am worried how he'll sound 2-3 months into the tour if he's this rough night 1, but still looks like a good time
>>130570330(OP) Anika Niles is Moreno top of her game than the others. Geddys voice is pitchy and he often sings the parts lower than the record-going for low hanging fruit. Lifeson plays a few flubs I don’t think they are giving her the credit she deserves. They couldn’t do this without her and they are quite obviously not presenting her as an equal member. If Neil Peart can see this from the afterlife, he is pissed.

>>130576275 THE OLDS ARE JUST TOO GREEDY WE WILL MAKE THEM GIVE US LIGHT
>>130570330(OP) Cool, thanks. Can't help but notice Xanadu is becoming a bit of a Rush meme song, which is unfortunate because its brilliant.
>>130572638 Total opposite. Peart loved Buddy, but Peart was not a Buddy player, not even towards the end when he really tried. He was a basher, extremely hard hitter, very little in the way of gladstone rebound or that type of control. You can hear Moon in everything he ever wrote. Annika has way more swing to her technique, it just sounds a little flat because she's lacking some heavy hands, especially on the toms. I love it, though. Good to hear a different alchemy.
Its weird Peart got the reputation of a lite player. Perfectly technical, sure, but more in the sense of filling space. If you're not on board, check out his performances from this clinic, its his warts and all playing style, its great.
Lifeson taking a page from the Greg Lake late career book (its a cookbook)

>>130577125 Snobby anons can call Rush buttprog all they want, but I will die on the hill that Xanadu is 11 of the most immaculate and exciting minutes in all of prog, no bands barred.

>>130577241 >buttprog Sounds queer. Yeah, Xanadu and really the whole AFTK album, full of transcendental moments. Small wonder Primus did a tour where they just play that one album.

>>130577251 AFTK was my gateway into Rush and prog in general. My dad had almost every Rush album up to 1987 in his itunes library (mostly taken from limewire lol) and I was looking for something different, just picked that album at random.

>>130577125 I think it's a bit reductive to peg him as a basher. The Moon influence was especially strong on the earliest stuff but I think by Rush's peak he had carved out his own niche that was hard hitting and technically precise but with a light and slinky quality at the same time. Tom Sawyer is a perfect example of that and it's no wonder it was one of the drum parts he was most proud of.

Anonymous06/09/26(Tue)05:01:16
>>130577409 Tom Sawyer is a good example of a Moon-like pacing. The reliance on narrative crashes parallels Baba O'Reilly. Not going for contrarian, its just one of the examples I would give for that influence. I'm taling mostly in the "post-verse" portions, since Tom Sawyer doesn't really have conventional parts. That said, of course he carved his own niche, but if I had to talk about just his feet and hands, he was way more grip and rip, which is what he attempted to cure himself of with Gruber. Thing is, he wasn't broken. Gruber is more for your Steve Smiths of the world. Guys who consider it poor form to actually touch the stick. I think the outcome was still very smooth and interesting. Color Of Right is good example.
>>130571419 Geddy had over a decade to rest his voice, makes sense he sounds a lot better. New drummer is also pretty good, though if Mike Portnoy didn't return to Dream Theater about 3 years ago, he defiantly would have gotten the gig with Rush.

Anonymous06/09/26(Tue)17:38:04
>>130581144 Portnoy is probably the most obvious Peart clone among popular drummers so he seemed like an obvious choice. I'm sure he would loved to play given how big of a fanboy he is—even though last time he played with a band with a recently deceased drummer he ended up leaving DT—so my guess is that he wasn't even asked. Maybe they thought it's weird having a massive fanboy like him playing with them.

>>130579160 for me, Vital Signs should never leave the set. same with La Villa. no doubt Xanadu will be the epic opener every show. we will see tonight if the excellent 1-2 combo of By Tor into Working Man encore sticks... think the rotation tonight will be: Cygnus Closer to the heart Circumstances New World Man Anthem Fly by Night still can't give a fuck about anything after MP and to my ears those tunes were the ones Anikka sounded flat/uninspired on. so much so that Ged and Al should seriously perform a killer tour of the entire 2112, Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres with the drummer they have pushing them along now.

>>130585827 The sketches and the brand of Rush fan that followed largely killed my interest. Felt like going to a fucking Star Trek convention.
