is measuring pin to pin distance a reliable way of checking chain wear? like dose it isolate roller wear or whatever?

Chain checkers are useless, back when I went to bike shops I had a chain with maybe 300 miles on it, took it to the shop to replace a cable, and the shop monkey was like "your chain is old as fuck man!" and showed me with his chain checker that I needed to buy a new one

From then on I just tracked mileage and I replace them about every 2500 miles
