A jury has been seated in the high-profile case against Karmelo Anthony in the April 2025 stabbing death of Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet.
Opening arguments are expected to begin on Thursday morning.
Civil rights group The Next Generation Action Network said they were outraged at the jury selection process and that no Black jurors were selected from the jury pool. Metcalf was white and Anthony, the defendant, is Black.
“We are deeply disturbed by what we witnessed during jury selection today,” said Minister Dominique Alexander, President and CEO of the Next Generation Action Network. “The exclusion of all qualified Black jurors from serving on this case sends a troubling message to the community and raises questions that cannot be ignored. Every defendant deserves a fair trial, and every community deserves confidence that justice is being administered without bias or discrimination.”
Before the jury was seated, the defense and the state debated the state's striking three qualified Black jurors. The state said they wanted to strike them because they were all educators. The defense objected, arguing that if the three were struck, there would be no Black jurors deciding the case. Judge John Roach took the challenge under advisement but ultimately allowed the jurors to be struck.
Tensions boiled over outside the courthouse Thursday as Karmelo Anthony's murder trial got underway, with dueling crowds on both sides antagonizing each other as the racially-charged case kicks off in Texas.
Supporters of Anthony and Austin Metcalf squared off near the courthouse entrance, shouting at one another as crowds gathered for the opening day of testimony. Collin County sheriff's deputies remained nearby and monitored the situation as the groups exchanged heated words.

But due to his age, I don't think Life Without Parole is a possible outcome. I think Texas law says juveniles have to have a numbered sentence.
