well, I use the center diff lock a bunch, basically just flip it on for any dirt road or low speed driving in rain/snow and it keeps the rear wheels hooked up which is nice
and it drives itself on the highway while letting you have your hands in your lap as long as you tug on it periodically
I think the newer ones have a capacitative sensor instead that MAKES you keep hands on wheel at all times but I don't know for sure what the settings are for that newer tech
it has skid plates (I think equinox/terrain twins offer skids in the AT4 trim, and subaru has them on some models, but not 100% sure)
I flip on the 360 camera when pulling out of tight spaces or for 3 point turns and it actually will turn on on its own at low speeds on steep ramps and if it detects an obstacle
koreans put a lot of effort into the programming of their software and it shows
the safety features are useful and not overly intrusive
I do dream I had a turbo but this is probably more reliable, could use 20 more hp for passing though

I have AT tires but I think you need RT/MT tires if you deal regularly in thick mud.
The interior is much nicer than a Toyota, and it has more feature content than a Honda. Hondas are much more basic. Nissan has a nicer interior, but the software and platform are both ancient.

I'm thankful to drive an automatic, but, realistically, any car is a manual on rough/winding roads if you don't have gobs of torque because you have to keep it in the power band and the auto programming tries to shift it into top gear even at 50 mph

there's so little torque from an NA 4-banger that you have to shift it manually on all but the straightest, flattest roads, and I do a lot of driving in the mountains so I feel other cars in the same price range would be equally shitty, but wonderful to be able to set it and forget it otherwise and not have to use my fucking foot to shift

I broke my left leg last winter. I would have been stranded if I had to modulate a clutch pedal.

I agree with your sense of style, those decorative bumpers do not accentuate the looks of that car. However, they also don't protect the oil pan, transmission, or gas tank since they are just front and rear bumpers. Actual skid plates cover more than what the bumper already covers.

It's so thin that it's nearly impossible to keep it clear on a highway during winter.
It'll freeze up while you drive, even with the heater on full blast.

i drove it in a blizzard and the sensors fucked up and it wouldn't let me use cruise control at all, but i could still see out the windshield. I have had cars where it felt like the windshields fogged up all the time and this doesn't do that.

frankly its more annoying than helpful unless you live in a really cold climate cuz the wires slightly obstruct your vision but you do get used to them mostly
I broke my ankle at the start of winter and didn't get out much this winter, but I imagine it would be more useful if I did travel around in winter.

I will say the heating/defrosting functions are SO much more efficient than they were on older vehicles I drove 20 years ago

I think the other features are the blind spot monitor which projects the side camera view when you activate your turn signal, I think it also includes rear automatic braking, the heated windscreen, maybe solar control glass, and the skidplates, but mainly got it for the skids

One time I parked off a path just like that in my Rav4 and one wheel sunk into the dirt and I was stuck for hours digging it out. No matter how hard I floored it the thing would not move, I probably nearly blew out the engine or trans.

Crossovers are not for offroad, keep them on the path.

I could only believe this happened to a hybrid with the cvt trans, those are notoriously bad offroad. I don't believe that there is a crossover on the market that offers AWD that can't get moving after losing traction to a single wheel.
Then there is the tire issue. LIke yeah you are not going to have fun if you go play in the mud in your quiet and economical summer tires.

I saw it next to a trugg (tundra) in a parking area yesterday. It got giga-mogged, way narrower, way lower to the ground, way shorter. But, some of the roads in the woods are super narrow so that's necessarily a bad thing.

I had my first skid today. I was going 30mph ish on a muddy downhill (steep) dirt road and the car lost control for a few seconds, had to countersteer in one direction, then the other, and then it came back. This is with AWD lock on, and all terrain tires (which are not great for mud, that's why they make rugged terrain and mud terrain tires I suppose) - it rained a bunch in the last few days

I mean I think in that situation a rear locker would have helped but AWD is certainly better than nothing. I've never really felt the traction or stability control do its thing and never had the light flash for that in the dash (my old jetta it used to cut power all the time), and only had the ABS engage once in heavy rain when I forgot to pump.

It was coming downhill from pic related that I skidded. It was like that video where the E36 goes down a hill but I tried to minimally correct the steering. It was scary as hell but I've been traveling for a year and a bit now and not skidded before.

If you had tried what I did today on summer tires I think you just would have died unless you did the whole thing at 10-15 mph.

AWD honey, not the same as 4wd. Decently treaded tires, I'd always get deep treaded ones. It literally just didn't do well once it was off a packed path. It wasn't so much that it dug itself in, the engine just couldn't spin the tires that had traction. I would floor it with no wheels moving, or slight movement that would just dig me deeper.

It was great in snow, absolutely shit offroad. Could only handle paths if they weren't wet or loose dirt.

Honestly it does fine on rough roads. I'm more of a pussy than it is, but I obviously concede it's not gonna do as well as a truck with 4wd and a locker, but it's also much less crude than that the rest of the time
