I hang out in the left lane going the speed limit because it's the SPEED LIMIT
I consider it my moral duty to help others obey the law

Anonymous06/08/26(Mon)13:57:16
We have 3 groups of people in particular that I think make up the majority of left lane campers Imports who literally don't know the traffic laws and don't even have licenses Old people whose brains are so deteriorated that they can't even do anything other than drive in a straight line and they can barely do that Prescription medication guinea pigs so hopped up on uppers and downers that they forget about the existence of anything not directly in front of them Once anyone from these groups gets in to the left lane then they just live there

>>28977931 What's wrong with going the speed limit though? Why are the police making public service announcements telling the public to help enable lawlessness?
If the speed limit is too low, it should be increased. But it's not too low. In many cases it is too high.

Anonymous06/08/26(Mon)14:11:53
If you're going the speed limit in the left lane... anyone that is moving faster than you is breaking the law. You're only being a nuisance to criminals.

Lane discipline increases throughput. Obsessing about speed limits is for people who can’t understand that there exist other rules. If people filtered by lane we wouldn’t have as much congestion in the first place. A million cars right next to each other at random speeds in random lanes is more likely to cause accidents than speeding with a car here or there.

>>28978042 yeah but i posted the funny picture also that's literally how two lane highways become big freeways, it's the point of a meme. you start with a slightly overcongested highway, add in some sprawl and incompetent urban planning, and you end up with 10 lane monstrosities a couple of decades later
>>28977877(OP) The right lane is for driving the speed limit the further left you go the faster you go.

>>28978047 It's a tough situation though, and sometimes it's kind of the inverse, it's traffic between two ends of the highway rather than development along it that's the big problem. That's the case here in Central Oregon, where you've got Bend and Redmond ~20mi apart, Bend has most of the jobs but has become a major retirement and work from home destination, which has driven housing prices up to the point that people who actually work locally have to live in Redmond and make the commute every day, and the 2-lane (each way) rural highway, US-97, is really struggling under the pressure, especially because it isn't a limited access freeway, it's lined with small farms and rural businesses (tractor dealers, construction companies, etc.) that have driveways straight onto the highway, and you're basically forced to drive in the left lane to avoid the danger of people suddenly pulling onto the highway or slamming on their brakes to turn off. I think it's eventually going to have to get expanded into a real freeway or they'll have to build a separate one somewhere nearby, since the region has skyrocketed in population and it's getting increasingly hard to deal with no having one.
retards here in California treat it as the lane to go fast to get into, then let off the gas and chill at 43 mph in rush hour traffic with no one in front of them.
>>28977927 i do the same thing. i drive an 18 wheeler, and i make sure to stay in the left hand lane whenever possible and drive the speed limit, preferably when a car is to my right also driving the speed limit. you WILL drive the speed limit while i am on the road, and the highways are safer for it. you can honk, flash your lights, and tailgate all you want, but you are going to comply with safe driving guidelines and laws. you might be angry now, but you can thank me later when you realize how much i'm helping this country's roadways and travel corridors in the long run.

>>28978355 Socal in particular has some really unhinged driving habits. One I've noticed is that people will preferentially pass on the right. They'll straight up ignore an empty left lane to pull some sketchy bullshit in the far right lane. As a result you often get the situation on LA freeways where the right lane is moving faster than any of the others. Another is the insane number of people who absolutely refuse to accelerate past 30mph while within an onramp and will instead cause the whole right lane to slam on their brakes as they pull in. This obviously causes havoc when combined with the first issue.
I've discovered some new ones since moving to Oregon. My latest fresh hell is people who go 80 in the left lane when nobody is in the right lane but slow to about 1mph faster than right lane traffic whenever they're passing. I had two separate cars in a row do that to me in one commute last week.

Anonymous06/08/26(Mon)21:47:12
>>28978036 It's almost like adding lanes is a temporary fix that will never be able to solve the problem of finite road space vs infinite population growth. There is literally no permanent solution except population reduction. As long as millions of new drivers are being added each year, congestion is inevitable.

>>28977877(OP) The problem with people who complain about passing lane campers is that they're usually sitting permanently in the passing lane themselves, just going faster than the person in front. They try to flex "the law" on people while flagrantly breaking it themselves. In my country you're not even allowed to go over the speed limit to pass. Genuinely just entitled retards. I do get pissed off at truck drivers moving out of the slow lane and then either failing to overtake and giving up or taking fucking 5 kilometres to overtake.

>>28978451 Just because it's not always a permanent solution doesn't mean that it never makes sense to do it. Bottlenecks like interchanges are often the problem and adding an extra lane near them can often solve the issue. Going from two lanes to three is also a big deal because it lets through traffic avoid slow trucks and people merging on and off the highway without clogging up the passing lane.

In my country you're not even allowed to go over the speed limit to pass. >Genuinely just entitled retards. I am generally the fastest car around, I have always filtered right, for decades. In fact, on long road trips it gives me something to do and think about to keep me alert. The problem isn't the law, I clearly don't respect the law, the problem is that driving random speeds in random lanes causes clustering even in places without lights or stops. This causes congestion which often leads to accidents as the pack is jockying left and right to get ahead, and it's usually not the person who caused it that gets in a wreck, very entitled. ...Truth is, left lane hogs are scared of driving. They sit there in the left lane going the speed limit because there's only one lane to worry about and no on-ramps to deal with. My 76 y.o. dad does it, the sorority sluts in college did it. They do not care a bit about anyone else and just want driving to be as easy as possible (but they'll rage when other people inconvenience them).

>>28977942 None of this has anything to do with the speed limit. No one ever said anything about the speed limit.
>>28978705 Yeah, we really need one, and really a whole interstate or something, the fact that an area with 250k+ people is only connected to the rest of the world by 2-lane (one each way) roads, most of which are mountain roads, is kinda nuts. Unfortunately Oregon is dominated by Portland politics that are dead set against anything like that.
