This is a thread for enjoying a pipe while doing outdoor activities. If you ask why this belongs on /out/, you've never spent an evening by the campfire with a pipe silently enjoying the nature around you, and you're missing out.
>how to get started Purchase a corn cob pipe (or a cheap briar pipe) and a pouch of Half and Half or Captain Black tobacco from a smoke shop or online. You will need a lighter or match, and something to tamp it with--a large nail works well if you don't have a pipe tool. Fill the pipe with tobacco, pack it down halfway, top it off, pack it down to 3/4, top it off again, pack gently and enjoy. Smoke slower than you think you need to, the tobacco tastes best when it is burning cool. Tamp and re-light as needed. If you still have trouble, try different methods on YouTube until you find one that works for you. >smoking a pipe will give you cancer Originally the Surgeon General found that pipe and cigar smokers, following a careful study of the statistics (at a time when most adults smoked, so they had a good sample size), had insignificant death rate increases. Nowadays, tobacco is being legislated against while hard drugs are being legalized. Put two and two together. Tobacco is just another good thing under attack by the government.
>muh weed Not the time or place. Start your own thread.
All tobacco users welcome.

What's /out/ smoking now that spring is finally here?

is there a tobacco you guys would recommend to someone that tend to smoke too fast?

>>2868481 i'd recommend finding a way to constrain the draw, like using a filter, an insert, or a stinger/condenser

Anonymous05/13/26(Wed)02:23:37
>>2868481 Maybe an aromatic. I don't like aromatics that much, but if you smoke aromatics too fast they taste even more like hot air than usual and they can give tongue bite. Maybe also learn the "breath method" and just do solely that for a while.
Breath method is basically you just stick the pipe in your mouth and breath normally. Your tongue sort of acts as a diaphragm and draws the pipe for you anyway.

>>2868476 Englishes are almost complete out for me now! I don’t like em’ with warm weather. I tend to reach more towards brighter virginias in Spring and Summer—namely chasing that hayey, bready, and/or citrusy profile. Virginias and VaPers. Think Orlik, HH Virginia, Luxury Bullseye, Bayou Morning Flake. Yummy stuff (though today I think I fancy some tart Kentucky so it will probably be jackknife plug getting stuffed into a cob when I get home)

I’ve noticed that I tend to avoid my plug cut tobaccos, just because the preparation always seems too inconvenient in my head. But every time I actually smoke them it really isn’t too difficult to prepare and smoke and I’m always left wondering why I avoid them. I need to get over this silly little mental barrier

G.L. Pease blends really are impressively good, and represent some of the best quality leaf that comes out of the cornell & diehl factory. I think GLP even beats out the new Per G. Jensen line through c&d

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but aromatics are so gay and gross. Are you going to paint your nails after you smoke your goopy cherry vanilla maple hazelnut chocolate 0% nicotine blend? Put another ladder on the back of your jeep with ducks across the dash board?

Does anyone have any recommendations for some OTC codger blends? I have half & half, which I quite enjoy every now and then. Trying to decide between getting a tub of Carter Hall or Prince Albert.
00
Anonymous05/15/26(Fri)13:03:00
>>2868715 carter hall is heavy on burley, and while prince albert is also seen as a burley, it has black cavendish in it, so it really depends on what you're into
Started putting ground up poppy seeds in with along with my bac. Hooooooly shiiiiiiiit bros.

Anonymous05/15/26(Fri)21:16:05
>>2868747 Is it just a nutty flavor or is there actually any meaningful amount of alkaloids leftover to feel something? Any claims of euphoria from this is probably just explained as a placebo. Still though, I love poppy seed
00
Anonymous05/15/26(Fri)22:33:55
>>2868677 I don't like aromatics just because I don't like them that much. Carter Hall type aromatics is the most I can really tolerate as being smokeable. Even something like C&D's Bijou is just too much aromatic for me even though I really wanted to like it. You need to smoke them way too slowly to get them to taste like anything other than just hot air.
Though I will say, a cigar shop I went to while sort of out of town (hours away) had this house blend that was kind of like a kitchen sink blend. Perique, Latakia, Burley, I'm sure Virginia, Black Cavendish, etc. Just kinda everything, and it was topped with some light chocolate flavor. That was an aromatic that I could easily see myself smoking, but it's just too far away to go get and I haven't found that blend online anywhere. It was like 90% cigar and vapes so I have a hard time believing it was genuinely a house blend, but it might have been.
>>2868747 don't do it again or you'll become addicted to polish pastries >>2868761 you can get high off it, so long as its the correct poppy variety in fact, even half of a dried poppy pod has killed a guy after they made a tea out of it
00
Anonymous05/16/26(Sat)04:44:24
>>2868795 This is making my mouth water. I love poppy seeds UGH. In addition to tasting great in pastries and muffins and overnight oats - I went through a phase where I considered making unwashed poppy tea. I never considered grinding & smoking them, though. Would you be able to do it with regular ol’ poppy seeds obtained from a grocery store spice aisle? Or do you need more virginal unwashed home-grown ones. In minecraft; this is all about the hypothetical efficacy
00
Anonymous05/16/26(Sat)04:50:18
>>2868797 if its "breadseed poppy" (papaver somniferum), yeah, you can do it some people will buy a shaker of seeds & make a tea out of it for pain, but the pod itself is where you can really get the power out of
the biggest issue is that you don't know how much it actually has though, so you can pretty easily kill yourself if you're abusing it (well, that and the fact its extremely addictive, since its literally just opium) smoking it would definitely be the most dangerous way, since you'd have basically no time to tell if you're starting to overdose, along with the specific method being more addictive too

have someone here tried to replace these rubber clenchers by some rope or a nylon line? i want to be hand free but i don't want to chew too much on the stem itself, and do so without buying something on the web since i'm away, hence repurposing some line or similar
I love coin cuts so much it’s unreal. Very whimsical, fun to stuff or rub out. Beautiful presentation. Very euphoric when you get a new shipment of de luxe navy rolls or LBF and see all those stacked coins

It was asked in the last thread but I already forgor the answers: charcoal, meerscham, or balsa filters? I have a bunch of 9mm pipes but never use filters. Recently saw a discussion of a guy claiming his vaun dr perl filters give him better Virginia smoking sessions by killing the tongue bite. I’m interested in snagging some
What's the consensus on brair vs pear wood? I've enjoyed cigars for a while and want to dabble into pipes. Looking at the No. 25 Kaiser from Mr. Brog and a Retro Brair Smooth Apple. I've heard that pear heats too quickly/adds a fruity taste.
00
Anonymous05/29/26(Fri)04:55:54
>>2870093 get charcoal, they're cheap & work just fine if you're not used to filters, they'd suit you best anyway, as something like meer & balsa will have a learning curve / expectations they can't fill >>2870139 theres plenty of people who like pear wood pipes even after having briar, so i don't see why you shouldn't at least try it
00
Anonymous05/29/26(Fri)05:02:58
>>2870142 I can find briars everywhere, is there any other suppliers or reputable brands for pear wood other than Brog? Also is there any other woods I should keep my eye out for?
00
Anonymous05/29/26(Fri)06:01:32
>>2870144 theres cherry, olive, and bog oak, but they all burn easily compared to briar again, no reason not to get them, just can't smoke them too hard or anything like that
00
Anonymous05/29/26(Fri)06:39:56
>>2870144 You could always give a corncob a go if you're new and looking for something cheap and easily sourceable, a lot of people swear by them, they'll also impart a kettle corn flavor to most tobaccos which is often nice. If you're a cigar enjoyer, stay away from aromatics until you know them by reputation.

>>2870150 >they'll also impart a kettle corn flavor to most tobaccos i have never experienced this before all my cobs have basically no taste at all, besides when the wood stem insert gets charred, which simply tastes of wood

Anonymous05/30/26(Sat)22:28:23
Sometimes you just have a bad smoke. Beautiful day, wind didn’t look too crazy on the weather app, busted out my tin of salty dogs that I save for special occasions. Supposed to be a delectable evening on paper… Ended up with a breeze JUST consistent enough to blow over the pipe and scatter the baccy on my charring light. Then it just billowed my pipe too much and the whole smoke was too hot and my tongue got burned and I couldn’t taste a thing. Wind cap didn’t help, just caused my pipe to keep going out. Can’t win em all.
00
Anonymous05/30/26(Sat)22:49:11
>>2870337 to win against wind, you need to tamp accordingly, which i do by tamping harder than i normally would plus, wind can be useful as it keeps air flowing to cool the pipe's walls, while also allowing fewer relights
i am frequently on drives with the window all the way down, and have actually gotten 2 hours out of a smoke on one of them
00
Anonymous05/30/26(Sat)23:05:56
>>2870341 Yeah I find I can have successful blustery smokes with tall/skinny chambers. Corncobs, especially. Unfortunately I packed today’s blend in a squat and short briar–one of my smaller pipes–to try and use as little salty dogs as possible considering the hefty price. Nature said “not so fast, have some wind!”
