got a few of these prime and pretty bluegill at a spring near my house, water was nice and clear and they went for some pink powerbait instantly. pulled out 5 all around the same size, all looked super healthy. might grab a few on sunday for some dinner

Hey it’s newbie anon with the new ugly stick from last thread. Guys I fucked up I think. The 12 lb test is being weird. I think I might have put too much lime on the real maybe? Granted I haven’t casted in over a decade but I was only getting 50’-60’? Does that sound short for one handed? The big red flag to me was how much slack I had in the line after casting and even while reeling. Line to heavy maybe? Shit was Giga shallow so maybe my jig head was just hitting the bottom a lot and mostly scraping along?
Started getting weird tangle very quickly, like after 5 cast. Is this because of cast technique the heavier line? Could also be a result of not reeling the line during installation correctly, I feel like I may have twisted the shit out of it.
Anyways, was fun as fuck to atleast practice casting. Got the cousins coming at 7 am in the boat so we will see how it goes.
A little night fishing to end the week, I’ve still gotta work tomorrow but feels good to get some alone time.
>>2870259 I didn’t see the last thread but if you’re using braid you shouldn’t worry about twisting the line too much, braid has low line memory so it’s more forgiving in that aspect. If you’re casting one handed it’s going to be more difficult to gauge when to release the line, as well as heavier line generally not casting as far. Try casting two handed and only bringing the line back just slightly behind your head. Don’t sweep it too much, let the rod do the work. The line is getting stuck more because it’s a heavier line and you aren’t used to casting it, give it a slight bit more ass when you cast. You can also polish the top of the bale, get some car polish compound and clean up the top lip of the spool.
Some night fishing on an estuarine river for a few hrs. Heaps of bites but didnt land anything. Bastards kept stealing my worms before I could hook them. Probably dinky fish out there, as my hooks were already quite small. Still a good night on the water, not a soul in sight. Saw a few strange lights in the skies. Zipped in and out of the horizons behind the mountain without a sound. Beautiful clear full moon tonight, barely needed my headtorch.
You anons ever seen anything strange while fishing?

Most often it'll be a kangaroo or a possum at night. Fucken have managed to get within a metre of some big roos by chilling silently whilst fishing quite a few times

>>2870259 it's perfectly normal with a spinning reel to have some slack right after the cast. make it a habit to pull the slack taught either with your hand or by lifting the rod tip right after you close the bail after a cast every time. eventually it becomes second nature and automatic. it's best to do that to get the slack out before reeling in any line, otherwise it will come back to haunt you later via jumping off the spool and getting hung underneath. but 12lb is too heavy for the average spinning reel. make use of it for awhile if you can but eventually respool with 8lb yo-zuri hybrid or 8ln trilene XL instead of XT. the XL is softer.

How do you guys remember the difference between rod action and rod power?
00
Anonymous05/31/26(Sun)04:20:03
>>2870368 Action is how close to the tip it bends. Power is how much weight it takes to bend it.
00
Anonymous05/31/26(Sun)04:45:13
>>2870368 I look at it as power is how I can set it. Fast power? Flick of the wrist and the hook is set. Slow, I need a big pull up the rod. Weight is how I fight, light is good for small and inshore, heavy is for when I need to wear a belt and be tied to the chair for a 3+ hour tuna fight.
00
Anonymous05/31/26(Sun)09:16:51
>>2870370 this. however one thing to add is that the main reason the action is listed as a speed(slow-fast) is because of a thing called "recovery." basically how quickly the rod returns to being straight and and still. slow actions which bend further down the blank, also generally recover more slowly by nature.

>>2870394 I agree (different anon). The one exception is big, heavy baits.
this one was a fun fight it had thrown the hook and I had to recast for another try
realistically what can I even do about a fish throwing the hook besides applying constant pressure to the hook and keeping my rod tip low in the water?
00
Anonymous05/31/26(Sun)20:23:23
>>2870454 You want to keep the tip high and make sure to pull back slightly to maintain pressure if not reeling, your only keeping your tip down if it is windy and/or you're not fighting a fish
00
Anonymous06/01/26(Mon)00:44:11
>>2870454 Just keep the line tight, but you're going to have fish throw a hook, nothing you can do when that happens. Only real advice I have is to learn how some fight and be prepared based on your guess. Like, I do a lot of saltwater fishing, Stripers and flounder dive down while Blues, Tuna and Albacore tend to jump, so within 30 seconds I can usually tell what I have on my hook and "play" the game accordingly.

Anonymous06/01/26(Mon)08:43:18
>>2870454 9/10 times a bass throws a hook when it breaches the surface. whether jumping, or just simply when you get it too the boat/bank and lift it's head out of the water. never do that. if you are going to bring them to the surface, it needs to be only to flip them completely out of the water.

>>2870517 >Super excited to go out and get some swivels and clips now that I understand them and try other lures and be able to swap them out quickly without having to tie everyone lol. Not good, but I'm glad you got out fishing. You need to be able to tie knots without worry and without taking a long time. This comes with practice, and practice only costs a spool of cheap monofilament line, a lure or something to loop through, and some patience at your desk, in your car, or on the couch. I spool line for a living and fish in my spare time. I've practiced knots for hours. I know tons of them now. Even people with disabilities can learn to tie knots. You probably do not have tremors or a smooth brain, so you don't have an excuse. Go to animatedknots dot com. I recommend the clinch, palomar, and uni in that order.
00
Anonymous06/01/26(Mon)13:15:41
>>2870520 >>2870517 seconding the guy on learning knots, it will take you an hour or two at most to practice a bunch of knots with a bit of leftover spool, it will prove to be very useful if you need to retie something on the water, loosing a lure can always happen now i disagree on the choice of knots, your first priority should be the uni and after that it's improved version, clinch have it's uses and it's improved version the trilene knot is on par with improved uni, i don't like the palomar, you could use some loop knots too i prefer netknots dot com as a ressource
00
Anonymous06/01/26(Mon)13:27:19
all you need to know is the uni knot. I can tie it in like 30 seconds. 5-6 wraps. it's strong and consistent. I NEVER break off unless I intentionally do so on a snag.
00
Anonymous06/01/26(Mon)15:24:02
>>2870525 Maybe I should try it I do improved clinch, but will occasionally burn my mono leaders tying them (with spit)
>>2870344 Eh, spinning reel always caster farther practically but baitcasting just have much better control. Control is very important to fishing, especially when you go past shore fishing.

Anonymous06/02/26(Tue)01:07:08
>>2870546 I would toss it. It's clearly old and compromised. Maybe, it will be fine, but maybe, it will break on a fish or a snag.
recently got into fishing a few months ago, been enjoying it a lot. recently found out my cousin wanted to let go of his boat, wondering how it'd be for fishing. it's a 2000 seadoo speedster, 4 seater, twin rotax engine. won't be going anywhere but lakes and some larger rivers. thinking I could mount an anchor to it and some rod holders, go from there.
it's in mostly great condition and I'm getting it for 2.5, market price probably at 6 or so.
>>2870622 If it floats, it'll do. But on most lakes and rivers you'd be fine with a tinnie of some kind and an outboard motor. That thing might be overkill, but hey if it's a good price and works alright, just cruise in style. You could take it saltwater fishing too
I got a 32 inch rat on a popper last night >>2870622 Dont get that boat for fishing, theres nowhere for a trolling motor, its got fuck all for a deck, fishing rod holders will wind up being cumbersome and in the way, and whatever dumb ass mods you make to retrofit it for fishing will make it hard to sell when you decide you want a real boat. That boat is for pleasure boatihg, i.e. day drinking and driving like a cunt, and its good at exactly nothing else because of it. The only possible excuse for you to buy it is to immediately flip it to buy a fishing boat.
