In theory there is nothing wrong with the idea but in practice that's what it comes down to. I'd normally see nothing wrong with say a video game streamer who just uses a fictional avatar to represent himself to protect his anonymity. Consider MaxPax, he refuses to show his face or give his name for privacy reasons and if he just used a virtual avatar that would probably enhance the quality of his stream.

In practice they would be nothing without the character though and they're mostly just selling sex to idiots and letting them believe they have a chance with a fictional character that doesn't even exist, it's weird. Like the kind of situation where 70% of their viewers would disappear if it were found out they were in a relationship. I don't think anyone would care about that if MaxPax were.

I don't think I'd be able to fall in love with a fictional character. I'm not autistic and dedicated enough, there's not enough content and not enough interactivity. But when they character has a real person as backing who can actually give you attention it's so fucking powerful man.
It was the first time I felt attraction (love?) so strongly.
It feels like the girl is talking directly to you, even though she's taking to an idealized personification of her audience. You can't feel her disdain like you would if you were talking with a girl irl. Leading the conversation is offloaded on the whole chat so you're not gonna fumble and fuck up everything.

I'm past that stage now, I know they would all hate me, and I don't enjoy watching the streams anymore, they're boring.
My self worth hit its bottom honestly.

At least I didn't have money to give them, the few times I donated a dollar or two I regretted it after.

But meh, it doesn't really hold a candle to an actual conversation with someone. I don't really get it. I guess their skill is to make it feel that way but it seems boring to me.

They of course are also very good at creating a system where people feel that the more they spend, the more loved they are, same with host clubs where there are all sorts of weird perks for spending money and they're good at creating these rank lists and other things that make people there feel like spending a lot is a status symbol rather than being a loser with bizarre euphemisms like "supporting the host's dreams" and things like that.

They're good at talking, it's a one-sided conversation where only one person talks, but they mastered the skill to make it feel sort of like a conversation, like they value each and every one of their listeners individually I guess, so the audience doesn't have to do anything.

Truth be told if you were to ask me right now I'd also say that I feel like I have nothing to talk about, so I just checked some recent chatlogs online with some female friends and it's really so insignificant that it barely registers
