This mission (artemis3) was meant to buy down risk for the lunar landing by testing as many components as possible, particularly the lander.
But in the end SpaceX won't even be flying a lander, the suits won't be tested there either. Maybe the main point is just to buy some more time.

Now to be clear, do I think that with enough time and money you could get a GB300 rack to run in space? Sure. But this looks a a quagmire of a decade+ project that will either drastically under-deliver or just get canned because it's extremely impractical and is not competitive with land based systems.

Their first launch vehicles that weren't derived from sounding rockets used Thor-Delta first stages licensed from McDonnell Douglas, and their first major domestically built stage was a hydrogen fueled design that fit on top of the Thor-ELT. When they started work on the H-2 most of their theoretical propulsion engineering experience and all of their practical experience was working with hydrogen designs, so the H-2 ended up with a hydrogen core and upper stage paired with two big segmented SRBs. Since this was being developed in the same timeframe as the Ariane 5 and everyone was taking their cues from the highly successful space shuttle program, no one really thought too much about potential alternatives. Japan's done some conceptual work on methalox engines as far back as the late 1990s, but with the space launch market being what it's was they didn't have much of a shot putting those ideas into service.
