They don't want to risk re-aggravating his injury. You should want him to not start week 1. If it was up to me, I'd much rather start Mahomes against the Colts than the Broncos. I'd even consider starting Mahomes against the Dolphins or Raiders. You have a week 5 bye. Some people have said to start Mahomes after the bye since your at minimum going to be 2-2, but I think you want to get him reps in September. The Phins will have 0 pass rush, I'd start Mahomes week 2 or 3

You guys were bad last year and will go 8-9 this year, but that's besides the point. Reid has to think big picture. If Mahomes gets hurt week 1, that could unironically tank the entire season. It's much better to accept being 0-1 if it means going into the bye 3-1. You come out of the bye into the Chargers, Seahawks, and Broncos again, so if I was a Chiefs fan I'd want Mahomes to get at least two full easy games against the Phins and Ders to put him back in the saddle
