Someone recommended Darkest Dungeon earlier, specifically the Crimson Court missions.

Setting my bias and in character views aside, I feel like Serpentis is very.... gamey? It's a discipline designed to give a social character with no physical disciplines some combat ability.

Lasombra fall into that trap when you think about normal, conventional, "human" methods and strategies to gain power, influence, prestige, etc. Ventrue are already plenty evil, but they're a familiar evil. They want to rule, control, and be obeyed. How they do that, and what they do with it is highly variable, but that's their core. They come off as "not that bad" when compared to their rivals because they can usually be reasoned with and it's not that hard to give them what they want.

So you're probably not thinking fucked up enough when it comes to Lasombra. Their comically evil embracing habit exists to break down the psyche of and dehumanize the prospective childe before they're even embraced. Don't think in terms of station and position, think in more basic terms of power. Power doesn't need to be wealth, reputation, and influence. Power can be far cruder "who needs money when I can take whatever I want?" or more esoteric, make them a discipline-oriented witch king. Whereas Ventrue typically view disciplines as a tool to not be used too hastily, especially when mundane charisma can manage, have this guy use disciplines to make a statement. He is beyond human, why would he use pathetic mortal techniques like "persuasion" when he can use Dominate? Efficacy is irrelevant, it's about the principle of the thing.

I've always found the "master manipulator" claims about the Lasombra to be laughable, considering how they're otherwise depicted. Subtle as a brick to the face, with disciplines that scream brute force.
