Is Infect still modern-competitive? I haven't played since 2015. Still have my G Infect deck, I want to play modern at a LGS but won't bother if I'm gonna go 0-8.

not in the most literal sense of the word, I can imagine the deck having a good matchup against tron and amulet specifically, but if you get matched against boros energy or prowess, you're gonna have a bad time

in other words, I don't think it's impossible for you to win games, but you should not expect more than a couple of wins if we're being realistic

Kaya was guildmaster for a short while after assassinating the Obzedat. It was the result of a legal technicality that Teysa hadn't been aware of. Obviously Kaya is no longer in that position, but the fact remains.

it's banned in standard and pioneer so you can't really abuse it there, it is not good enough for modern or legacy imo, unless you're playing a glass cannon deck, in which case there are better options

It's not a rules term, more a connotation. Spiders tend to have deathtouch and reach. Soldiers tend to have first strike. Elves tend to make mana. It's not something explicit like "every creature with the type Wall has Defender" (though that did used to be true for walls), it's just thematic throughlines that carry through sets.

Initial Premodern hype-up included a Reddit post about Premodern being huge in Brazil...or something, I don't have that screencap saved. Pro/Anti-Skub - I mean Premodern - shitflinging ensued whenever the fan-made format was brought up, with the "anti" side claiming the "pro" side was composed of third-world subhumans. It didn't really help that originally the games were played in webcam leagues, which leave no presence on the net at large. Posting event results from paper tourneys around the world didn't change anything. Having Premodern added to MTGO hasn't changed anything. At this point you can just expect the "play premodern - go back to Brazil" call-and-response to be perpetuated by anons "for the lulz" as we used to say back in the day.

Well there's nothing exciting to talk about. Modern has been dying since Horizons, but at this point even the "it's still good!" anons have given up on it. Standard has been killed by rotation (or lack thereof), printing OP stuff that gets banned in 6 months, and mandatory UB inclusion - the last of which also killed lore. Limited (and pauper) have been fucked with, such as by spider legendaries at common. Release schedule fatigues even the most die-hard fans. Arena sequesters players, both because they don't have to play IRL and because the cards/formats are different. The only thing "thriving" is EDH, to the point that "regular" sets are very blatantly being designed for it.

WOTC hasn't killed the cash cow yet, but the milk is pretty sour. And even if they noticed, Maro still wants his dream Star Trek set. See "Magic boom in Nebraska" for WOTC claiming gains and people not seeing where. WOTC will keep trying to get a return on UB investment, which means at the very least we're getting more of the same until current IP contracts run out. Expect no course correction until the end of next year, at best.

I'm sure anons used to come here to jeer at the current state of Magic, but now it feels less like hoping your ex isn't doing well in life and more like pitying a dying animal whose owners claim they're not abusive.

Well it's not a real format. Until it is, and WOTC starts printing cards for it, and fucks it up. Which won't happen because it's specific years/sets, but they could make a council and take over! But also old cards are expensive. Except you can just use reprints and proxies. Which means WOTC could print cards for it and make it more accessible and sneak in! Maybe. Years from now. But it's not being played anywhere, you can't just walk into your store, you have to evangelize it there first and get converts! Except it's on MTGO now, too. But...

It's actually a very human reaction, one you can observe on this board every time an RPG gets a new edition. Those people are having fun WRONG! I don't want to join them, I want them to have no option except to play with me! They shouldn't have made a new/old/different thing to which everyone flocks, leaving me behind! Moving takes energy, I am comfortable where I am. I hate them for ruining things for me. Anyone who leaves me for the new/old/different thing is a terrible subhuman.

There are at least two very real complaints about Premodern, though. One, its banlist. Cards are banned "because they're used often enough in other formats." Which is a bit BS if you want a fan format covering specific sets, but on the other hand cards like Force of Will do warp formats around themselves. Two, it still uses modern rules. Ostensibly because it doesn't want players to learn a whole new ruleset, but a large number of cards don't work like they did back in the day (Morphling combat damage for example). That said, there were multiple ruleset changes between 95 and 03, you'd have a difficult time reconciling them all.

Have you seen the amount of players Premodern gets in tournaments happening all around the world these days? It's one of the current more active formats, how can you say it's "not a real format".

I'm just parroting criticism. Premodern is technically recognized by WOTC via MTGO right now, but you still can't have it as as sanctioned paper tournament format. People who stick to that point aren't really upset at Premodern. They're upset that WOTC fucked "real" formats so badly players are flocking to "fakes" like Premodern, so "real" tournaments don't fire. They want WOTC to fix its shit so the formats they play don't bleed players.

The fracturing of a user base is a consequence of mismanagement.

Think of it in terms of F2P videogames. The vast majority of $ made is off whales. But whales need somewhere to swim. There have to be enough incentives for the free players to actually play, so that whales can show off their bling (if cosmetic) or munch on some weaklings (if pay2win). If the whale can't show off their purchases, they have much less incentive to keep buying.

Magic's user base is currently significantly fractured. Too many formats, not enough players. Each pool is too shallow. Sweatlords are brooding in corners because the 8-man 3-round tourney they want to play in doesn't fire. They're holding out because they're deeply invested. Jumping ship means starting from scratch.
