This is a general for a version of Magic the Gathering that excludes 3rd party IPs, these cards are known as "Universes Beyond". This thread is not a duplicate of any other general, it is not a fork of any specific general. There is growing support for versions of Magic formats that exclude UB, for example Planar Standard. This general is the place for those discussions This general is as legitimate as D&D Old School Renaissance threads and it exists for similar reasons.
Discussion of Magic the Gathering where no set or release that required 3rd party IP licensing can be mentioned. That includes Universes Beyond and Secret Lair.
The ONLY Magic sets this year: >Lorwyn Eclipsed, January 23 2026 >Secrets of Strixhaven, April 24 2026 >Reality Fracture, October 2 2026
>>98204890 I did the Edge of Eternities pre-release and liked it. Strixhaven pr was apparently a bit of a shit show because they skewed the boxes to have higher rates of the color pairs of each school or something, and some pairs were just objectively better than ever so you kind of get randomly assigned whether you're gonna win or lose based on your box
>>98205143 The only prerelease kit that wasn't sold out for my prerelease was Lorehold and my seeded pool was so bad. I got a bunch of duplicate shit commons, and almost all of my Lorehold-specific cards cared about cards leaving the graveyard when I only opened 4 cards that let cards leave my graveyard. I ended up running a jeskai spell shitpile with pic related and two Zaffai and got curb stomped by every deck I went up against.
>>98205329 I chose lorehold because I'm retarded. I had a modest amount of grave synergy, but basically my only removal was this absolute pile of shit card. >basically a shock >but double the mana >at sorcery speed "But it has flashback!" No one is spending 5 mana for 2 fucking damage at sorcery speed, 2 mana is bad enough.

>>98205329 >>98205921 I didn't hear but I heard quandrix was busted. Simic often is at draft, draw and lands are the most important things in the game

>>98205921 went prismari and this card was pretty good with opus since it cares about the amount spent on cast. even the 7 mana to kill something 4 toughness saved me a couple times

>>98206306 I had a good amount of izzet cards but like 2 blue cards. I probably should have splashed, but I boros just plays so different to izzet here and I really didn't have many good instants and sorceries worth casting so I was pretty stuck. The boros deck still did ita thing a few games, but only enough for 1/3 and that one my opponent was very new to mtg.

>>98206306 Opus is good design to pivot izzet into big mana over spellslinging but limited environments just dont enable big mana spells. It's an aggro format or nothing

>>98206413 yeah I lost to every aggro deck with white but anything midrange I won against
>TQ she cute >play piru >read her ability to the table >"holy fuck thats broken" >uhhh if you don't do anything except spam tokens, I guess it is >she gets instantly removed every time I play her >even on boards with 20+ creatures, my opponents waste removal to kill her >get up to 400+ life >win game because they can't hurt me >turns out the entire table misheard, and thought she was a repeatable boardwipe for 3 mana >I never played her like that, so I don't know why they thought that

>>98209436 >scute swarm! >piru upkeep, decline >reanimate scute swarm! >piru upkeep, decline >scute swarm there were 4 scute swarms the entire game, and you bet they were complaining that a boardwipe in the zone was broken

>>98208862 If you think a commander removal that bypassed hexproof and ward in commander isn't good, you don't know what a good magic card is.
