It's because the makers of 40YOV would never be into the type of chick who's a collector herself. In the movie we see lots of female archetypes but notably missing is the nerd freak type (maybe the girl in the flashback but that's just going off her hardware). Because they would never see one of those girls as desirable, the movie ignores their very real place in the virginal collector nerd ecosystem.

Women often times find status more attractive than looks. Status can mean several things but it often times translates into money. A common female tactic is to shame others by calling them virgins/losers. Females use shame as a weapon on eachother all the time since they tend to operate by hivemind rules hence why they try to use it on men as well. The first was the girl at the counter who rang me up. She told me the picture on the gundam Calibarn box looked cool and after a small talk I told her she should watch the anime sometime too :)

Appropriately, this is the sort of thread that would've made sense 20 years ago when this movie came out rather than today where everyone's collecting something and most toy reviewers you know are married with children. I've personally known women who collect funkos, anime figures, pokemon plushes, etc. Nerd culture going mainstream may be a double-edged sword that's done more harm than good in some respects, but it's greatly helped acceptability.

There's a shred of truth in every stereotype, whether positive or negative. We may have wives and children and lead normal lives, but it's in people's natures to fixate on the unusual. If they want to see collectors as misfits, then that's all they're going to see.

Because that's the first-order approximation of reality. Some people really are like that and they're the more vocal or visible ones.

I've been in a happy relationship for a decade now, but prior to that had my fair share of hookups. So much money spent buying expensive cocktails in shitty clubs and pubs.. my toy "costs" barely compare, and they don't end up as puke by a club in Seoul, Berlin or Chicago.
Having a couple figures on my desk makes me happy. Creating some scenes and finding cool props for the figures makes me happy. Building simple model kits makes me happy. That's it.

Eh, not really. Sony eclipsed Nintendo a while ago. While I agree the type of games you prefer changes how you're perceived and Nintendo games are seen as juvenile for the most part, I was thinking more mainstream dudebro games like COD, GTA, Assassin's Creed, Gears/God of War, fighting games, sports games, and so on. And in women's case, Sims and mobile games. It's very easy to divorce Nintendo from all that.

The closest I dated to a collector type personality was someone into film once and another time, some really into music (expensive stereo, ridiculous speakers, lots of CDs and vinyl, etc.). I have friends into comics, or toys, or some other nerd hobby (cards, vidya, etc.) but these are people I hang out with - not date much less fuck around with.
