I bought a Peak Design 45L Travel Backpack that was from a guy who had ut RMAd(but not actually returned) for $120 because the front zipper was slightly broken.
It’s been an excellent travel backpack for me with lots of space for clothes and gear. I was never questioned about the weight even on LCC despite carrying probably 15kg. And the zipper was easily fixed by just stitching the torn side back on.
Lot’s of space and compartments and with lots of aftermarket components.
I know they’re a bit pricey, but I’m very happy with this one.

I've been using the same Swiss Gear backpack I bought when I started to travel 16 years ago. Not the biggest but it's taken a hell of a lot of abuse and is still my go-to carryon/day bag. Probably get another 16 years out of it at this rate

I bring kz iems for my thinkpad and as backups for my samsung beans. I have replaced my t420s with a t14 gen 2 and run xubuntu and the upgrade was enormous. I've used a cheap duffle and was forced to check it and then it was falling apart from being checked once and a (cheap) security camera I had inside was broken into pieces. I use a cheap timberland hardshell roller these days and it fits a lot but the casters are complete trash and the drag when rolling it sucks. I've also used a hiking backpack plus an underseat backpack and it just plain fucking sucks. I'll be buying a better hardshell carry on like the level 8 or away one in the op.

Quoddy blucher mocs are the ones I'm going to buy next. They can be dressed up to business casual level but are cool, are completely leather so can be worn sockless, and are casual enough for a tee shirt and cargo pants. They're also resolable and repairable and will last as long as boots.

I just avoid zippers on backpacks. I've been using the same 20L as my small underseat backpack for 12 years. It has metal and leather hardware and no zippers. The only piece that has real wear is the drawstring. I just oil the leather and spray it with some scotch guard occasionally.

Durability, the casters and bearings, rigidity of the telescoping handle, zipper durability, stability when standing up. There's a reason flight crews all use travel pros. Nothing worse than a broken caster or fucked telescoping handle in the middle of a trip.

If your shoes get soaking wet in a rainstorm, you'll be glad to have a pair of sandals on hand while you wait for your shoes to dry out again. Wet shoes make the soles of my feet very itchy after a while.

When I return to America I'll have to make space for food, water and camping gear in my luggage, as self-reliance is a must for a foot traveler. That means a bunch of shit will have to go, like all electronics apart from my one main phone. Some clothes will have to get thrown away as well, not a problem because many of them are old and wornout. Right now I have three pairs of long pants (plus the one I'm wearing) and seven pairs of everything else.

I bought picrel, a 21-inch Travelpro Platinum Elite, a few years ago and constantly run out of space, even when packing conservatively. I like Travelpro but want something slightly bigger for carry-on luggage. Any suggestions?

This is already 45L, and it's actually 23". It's already the max size you can get. I'd say you should max out your underseat backpack, get one that is around 30L and still fits under the seat.

Also, roll your clothes, don't fold them. And buy wool blend shirts that are antimicrobial. You only need 2 pairs of pants and you will wear one on the plane. I don't see how 45L is too little for you unless you're packing way too voluminous of clothing. Take packable jackets. Take only low top shoes that are compressible and don't have giant wedges for soles.

I don't wash my pants unless they're physically dirty. I just change my underwear. My normal pants are these. They have a waterproof coating and zipper vents on the side to keep you cool.

And I have this duluth groove belt that is plastic buckled so if you're at a small airport with only metal detectors instead of the human microwave, you don't have to remove it. It has a 96 year warranty so if it cracks or anything you can turn it in at any duluth for a new one.

And then I just wear this windbreaker. It zips into that kangaroo pocket which is huge and doesn't count as a 3rd bag so you basically have a fanny pack. It's comfortable from 45-85F although it isn't very waterproof. But I spray it with scotch guard if I need some more waterproofing or I bring my 3 ply packable rain jacket if I know it will be very rainy.

Also wool is a natural material. Those merino tees are 87% wool 13% nylon. Wool is antimicrobial and won't stink like cotton does. Nylon is added for strength because the tees are thin. It also dries faster than cotton if wet and is hydrophobic to begin with.

Yeah nah everybody knows that pants are like jackets. You don't wash a jacket every time you wear it. You change your shirt. You don't wash pants every time you wear them do you? Just wear clean underwear and hang them up. For example you should only wash jeans every 3-6 months of regular use, on cold, and hang dry.

I hate checking bags, and with those two, I have more than enough room for 3 or 4 weeks while doing laundry once or twice and being prepped for most any weather conditions. if you have a lot of electronics the best thing you can get is a GaN charger. If you get high enough watts you can charge everything off of a single small brick. And some of them have detachable outlet cables so you dont have to worry about converters, you can just buy the native cable before you go. for laptops i have a macbook that fits perfectly in the laptop sleeve of my small backpack, and a thinkpad that is built like a tank so I just throw it inside the duffle. if your backpack is too big they wont let you do personal item btw
