ITT: all things related to travel in Italy.

Starter question: Any input on day trips around Rome? I've already been to Rome to see the typical touristy spots, but now looking to branch out from Rome---but will still be sleeping in Rome each night for a few days in June. Can you rent a scooter to go out of town, such as Tivoli or Castel Gandolfo?

i'd looked at where would i consider day trips from Rome before.
Orvieto and Viterbo - both former Papal sites
Civita di Bagnoregio has a very picturesque viaduct, for this little hill town, tho it is a bit far maybe more of if you were doing a real day of touring driving.

I never heard anyone ever talk about Orte, but it looks cool

Basically anywhere is better than Rome. Italian small towns are very comfy. If there's a church and a good restaurant, you'll have a good time.

The cloudpuffs over each volcano are cool, but the endless sprawl isn't. IDK why I would visit Italy and pay extortionate rates for a room while saying "hurr durr it still costs more at Motel 6 in America". It'd be different if I spoke Italiano, but I have no interest in speaking wop.

I aave train tickets booked for Rome to Florence next Thursday but it seems there's going to be a strike. Strike starts at 9AM and I heard if I am on the train and the arrival is within 1h after strike starts the journey will finish. Can anyone confirm this? If that is the case, would booking 8AM tickets instead be safe?

there's a train that takes you there in like 45 minutes if you don't want to do the scooter thing. Orvieto is a great daytrip, same as Assissi. Lots of small coastal towns in the Lazio area, can't remember their names. And there's a bus that takes you to Monte Cassino, used to be an abbey where a great WWII battle happened, cool spot.

I don't normally carry cash, but there's a good amount of street food so bring eurocoins

any nice towns in the italian lakes that are not super expensive? I've visited Lake Garda before but just as a daytrip, this time I'd like to stay there somewhere for a few days.

It might be further than you're thinking, but I went to Naples for a day trip, it was cool to check it out without needing to stay there if it's somewhere you're not sure about
