Barbie was a meta/meme movie and pushed hard as a LGBT+ ally movie which made it a huge pull with genz and women. And they don't go to movies unless they drag their cis boyfriends with so it made bank.

He-Man and MotW is purely in the domain of manchildren. Even the meme factor of it is negligible and people that saw it are saying it's highly derivative and comes off as a gotg/thor mcu slop with lame jokes throughout.

It's not a bad movie at all, but it lacked a strong person in charge of the project. It definitely feels like it was designed by a committee and they just went through a checklist of references and jokes.

Michael Bay's Transformers was cool in it's own right and revitalized the entire brand for a new generation. This He-man reboot just looks completely mediocre.

I'd say genA is not nostalgic for anything.
They grew up on an already established ecosystem of social media and that system hasn't really changed since their formative years.
They're using the social media the same way and consuming content the same way since they were kids. Also they don't care that much about "mainstream media" like movies, tv shows and so on...

Theres also that 0.1% possibility they actually get a good director/producer thats somewhat decent at adapting source material while imbuing it with a breath of their own, COPS would work better as a more adult themes oriented cyberpunkish film, Id like to see what the guy who did the Dredd film with Urban could do with it or maybe even Blomkamp , I mean Copley as the big boss would be unironically KINO.

Maybe we as a society should finally accept that casting Jared Leto is not to be cast in would be blockbusters.

170m dollar budget or a movie on an IP that hasn't had any relevance for like 20+ years is pretty nuts.

Barbie had a 130m budget and was considered risky but they also got a criticall acclaimed director and a crazy stacked cast of actors and an interesting take on the material.

He man has like TV actors, and isn't doing anything remarkable with the IP. I'd love to know wtf the person who ok'ed this was thinking.

Na the cartoon is great. I'm rewatching it on Tubi now. It's so chaotic and nonsenical, I love it. Even the objectively abysmal animation has a fun and cheap quality like an old b movie.

I also cannot stress enough how good the original character design is for this show. I think the "toy commercial" aspect of 80s kids media made the creators think of the design of the characters first and figure out the lore after the fact. The result is very enduring and immediately recognizable characters.... and then they make a giant movie that disregards all that good design and wonder why it flops

He-Man was only popular in the 80s. Yes, it was very very popular, but then it failed to reach other generations. Every decade it tried to come back, but every time it tired to reinvent the wheel failing completely to recapture the imagination of kids. And it basically flopped every single time.
Would have been a good brand if they didn't shit the bed every single time? Who knows. Either way we don't live in that timeline

They only realised that Orko was the most popular character after they had finished shooting and had to try damage limitation with some last minute reshoots to add an after credits scene with him in when theysaw the backlash they were getting for leaving him out.

Likely the film makers didn't watch the original cartoon at all, just the Dolph film, else they might have had a clue that if you're doing a comic take on He-Man it might just be a good idea to include the main comic relief character from the cartoon in it as a main character.

Because of this any Uncles that had watched the cartoon first time around, were going to smell a rat and not be interested as they all know how the last film went when they replaced Orko (as apparently a fucking puppet would be too much for the budget). If you don't get an army of useful idiot Uncles hyping your film online then you don't get much buzz at all.
