Amazing how the art direction took such a massive turn after 4. You can see the similarities of Gen 2 and 1. Same with Gen 3 and 4.

Magmar was already a weird mon, now it's a weird mon with BAZOOKA ARMS which is cool.
Honestly the only gen 4 crosseovs I don't like are Rhyperior (I think Rhydon already worked fine as a final stage, I want to see them create a regional Rhyhorn line now) and Lickylicky (but Licktung in general is hard to create an evolution for, I didn't love any of the beta designs from the leaks either).

A bunch of Johtomons in particular felt like inferior options at the time of GS, why have Murkrow when you could have Pidgeot or Crobat? Why have a Yanma when you could have any other bug type? Misdreavus as the only Ghost-type introduction in gen 2 felt like a missed opportunity, etc. I like that the evolutions made them feel more like legit options to consider.
