Name a better western programmer than Ed Boon. Mortal Kombat 2 AI is a work of art.

Carmack, too easy. Though Boon is a bigger name for such a shitty genre (fighting games)

>>12626762(OP) all he ever programmed were mortal kombat games since the start of the 1990s (and no, we're not including pinball machines that he programmed in the 80s). basically any programmer that's done more than one series of game is better than this dude
>>12626762(OP) Carmack. Doom code is still a work of art.

Didn't the guy who made Rollercoaster Tycoon program the whole thing himself in assembly? I've only ever made games in Pico-8 so could someone explain to me, a literal retard, how Doom is more impressive than RT in this way?
Demis Hassabis. At 17, he co-programmed Theme Park, then built the adaptive creature AI for Black & White. He later founded DeepMind, moving from game development to creating AlphaGo and AlphaFold.

John Carmack Ken Silverman Chris Sawyer
I don't even think Boon rates in the top 10 and he has admitted he hasn't touched code in any recent MKs
He's most likely a good programmer but the really talented folks like Carmack, Silverman, Sweeney, Mathisen, Hecker and many others are way beyond his level.
Stil he was good enough to create a commercial product under time restraints - something most people will never be able to pull off.

>>12627895 Not only the reaction times, it also literally does shit that is impossible for a human player, like Liu Kang jumping, throwing an air fireball and then transitioning directly into a bicycle kick without his feet ever touching the ground or clipping through your throw to hit you with an uppercut, etc

>>12629048 Street Fighter II is just as bad, if not worse, with the walking charged moves and stopping a player's attack mid-animation to replace it when an enemy attack. There should seriously have been a class action lawsuit at some point. Their entire business model was based on fleecing children.

My deepest desire is to make Ed Boon sit down on a chair and he's not allowed to get up until he beats the MK2 arcade ladder without using exploits.
>>12629649 What a bizarre thing to say. I've literally witnessed it countless times, just play the fucking game against the CPU. These aren't rare occurrences.

It wasn't intended to. Anyone who goes against gaming racists is OK in my book.

>>12629048 I remember hearing the ai in MK2 always counters throws. Even if they're in the dying "finish him" pose they'll counter your throw.

>>12626809 The input reading AI that pulls off moves that would be impossible for a human player to do, not because of reaction time, but because the game lets it cheat and do moves in less frames than required? Yeah, thats the one.

>>12629704 In my version I give them a full week to practice and git gud. Then the real game begins and each time they die or lose, they get smacked across the face. The smack isn't particularly hard but it's enough to make them play better to avoid further punishment. I cheer them on and even give them a high five when they do well but the very second they lose they get another smack. "That was pretty close, though!" I say as I rub my hand on my shirt.

>>12629704 >>12629726 >>12630606 >>12631005 MK2's difficulty must've been mind bending at the time to hold this kind of grudge (probably doesn't help that it feels like you're being robbed)
>>12627018 Assembly is not particularly difficult, it's just different. There was a period when 5th gen dev kits transitioned to C when programmers were reluctant to learn a higher level language because they were so used to assembly. You can see this in released source code comments and Sony BBS logs for example.
Carmack has been a "researchbro" for many years now similar to Abrash. As much as I adore Carmack, Silverman still has some nostalgia for the 90ies and bleeding edge development - that makes him a bit more "human" to me.
Am i dreaming or no one has mentioned andy gavin ?
