>>12628673 RE1 is like FF7 in that the prerendered backgrounds have no dithering applied to them but the character models and other real polygons have dithering for shading/texture.
>>12629498 >RE1 is like FF7 in that the prerendered backgrounds have no dithering applied to them I never noticed any banding in FF7; they look plenty dithered to me.
>>12629509 Because that's a gif which uses dithering to compress itself.
Any dithering in the prerendered backgrounds comes from when they were rendered or from transparent polygons overtop.

>>12628673 your brightness is turned up way too high. the backgrounds in RE are MDEC-encoded, which is basically legally-distinct JPEG. the blocky areas you see here are supposed to be dark enough to barely see
>>12629519 It's not going to dither any banding away because GIF compression isn't going to create detail where none exists. And pic related is a raw extract from the ROM and it seems to look identical to the gif (if you'll excuse the grid created by the "Makou Reactor" software).

As I said before, the background do not use dithering.

>>12629537 >Not the lack of dithering anywhere in the image You just said the gif was dithered, so how can the raw image that looks identical not be dithered? Where did you see dithering in the gif that you don't see now?
>>12629572 Ah, I see what you did! You intentionally chose a picture with artist-placed dithering in the sky. Very cute... Of course, the PS1 dithering we are talking about is applying a dithered pattern across its polygon graphics, not just selective dithering used by artists when they created the prerendered image.
Here's an unaltered image of the Gold Saucer's prison area from the PS1 disc. Note, again, the lack of any dithering.

>>12629572 not him but gif supports 8-bit colour (256 colours), while playstation games typically use 15-bit (32,768 colours) modes (often with dither). the playstation supports up to 24-bit colour, but that was considered wasteful most of the time. a gif can't display as many colours as a typical playstation game can, so it's not suitable as a reference

>>12629581 >Of course, the PS1 dithering we are talking about-- --was the sort that may have benefited Resident Evil's backgrounds, which were absolute rubbish with lots of banding and evidently minimal dithering (>>12628673). I'm the anon who posted this >>12628627 and who isn't lying about there being dithering or less color banding on CRT and other cope to make REmake seem as terrible as possible in comparison
You can tell because the PS1 dither is a consistent "diamond" pattern, which isn't seen in FF7 or RE1's backgrounds.

Anonymous06/12/26(Fri)13:55:26
>>12629596 the hardware dither is a specific pattern, but that doesn't stop someone from making 15-bit images with any bespoke dither pattern

>>12629596 No one is talking about Sony's hardware dithering algorithm, we're talking about the backgrounds being dog shit in Resident Evil. Dithering had existed in games long before the PS1 and I don't know what you've hoped to achieve with this Ben Shapiro-esque pedantic meltdown because it doesn't help explain why Resident Evil's backgrounds are shit and does not debunk the existence of dithering in FF7's backgrounds. Being a pedantic cunt doesn't work when you're completely fucking wrong, you sped.

>>12629604 >>12629605 Really my point is to end the line of argumentation he wishes to go down: that whatever evidence others show doesn't count because it isn't how it is "supposed to look" aka how it looks on a real PS1 on a CRT. Even when presented with pics from a PS1 or off a CRT he still claims something is inauthentic so that's where FF7 comes in. FF7 is a very popular game that also does the same thing as RE1 by not having its backgrounds coated with dithering, but it hides the color-banding much better.
Now he's forced to deny the realities of a game he is NOT experienced with shitposting about for years.

>>12629524 Can you imagine how much money Capcom has made from this single game? It’s actually genius. Too bad the quality of REmake didn’t make it to the rest of the series because having 2, 3, and code Veronica w the same level and care of the original Remake would’ve been awesome. I tried Re2make and while pretty it was awful to play.

I just finished RE1 on PSX for the first time. I am an unc and my bros all played it back in the day except for me. I save scummed relentlessly and liberally perused a guide to make it more time efficient. It took 7 hours. I hated this game and it was a stressful nightmare to get through. I have absolutely no idea how any kids completed it back in the 90s without dying a trillion times to all the cheap unfair bullshit that this game throws at you. The lack of ammo, the impossibly narrow corridors, the first person cameras set up so the zombie 1-pixel out of frame will get a guaranteed hit on you when you walk through, the sluggish tank controls, the nimble hunters, the insultingly cramped inventory. The whole thing feels unfair "artificial difficulty". This is not my idea of fun and I don't understand how people can have fun playing this. But having said that, the guide I was following was made sure that I would save both Barry and Chris, and the final stretch of the game leading to the helicopter boss fight (which I had still never seen before) was extremely epic and almost worth all the rest of the bullshit. I have a lot of respect for this franchise, where it came from, and how it has grown. Thank you for reading my blog post. Please know that before you insult me, know that it does not matter, because I have already won.

>>12630204 I will also say I had no idea that there were cheesy FMV cut scenes with real life (shitty) actors in this game. And the Nine Inch Nails esque soundtrack was also welcome. It was funny listening to Wesker's voice actor and how nasally/nerdy he sounded compared to all the later incarnations of him.

There's exactly 1 enemy placement in RE1 I'd consider cheap. If you're playing Chris, there's a Hunter right inside the door to the 2F hallway that connects to the dining room balcony. Even if you know it's there, it almost always lands a cheap shot on you. They actually moved it down to the middle of the room in the DS version so that doesn't happen anymore.
