I hope whoever designed this zone never found a job in the gaming industry again.

This is such a underrated sonic zone im surprised its never returned. The closest way its returned was in the archie comics and the electric spike balls in flying battery zone in Sonic Mania but thats it. The level layout is the most Sonic CD layout there is but when you learn it the level gets easier. The music is REALLY good and fits the stage so well too. Beautiful awesome stage, needs to be referenced again some day

Japanese level design was always inferior to the West.
>>12629718 Play one of the million Western sidescrollers with big boring maze levels and tell me that again. In the 16-bit era, Japanese level design was far better on average. At least for platformers.

Sonic CD plays so similarly to eurojank that I'm very surprised it was developed solely by nips

Wacky Workbench is the best level in Sonic CD though, I'll never understand the "challenging = bad" shit that goes on with regards to Sonic fans.

>>12629652(OP) >americans suck at sonic, obviously SoJ was the saviour of the company and franchise! >NOOOOOOOO NOT LIKE THAT!!!
>>12629652(OP) Sonic CD is my favorite Sonic game and in my personal top 10 best games of all time. Wacky Workbench is without a doubt the worst classic Sonic level and is the only thing preventing CD from being a 10/10 for me.

>>12630951 It's been a while since I've played CD, but it seems better after you know the level and can go through fast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA7Z22_XWAM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWFEryJy5JQ The floors launching you in the air is a solid gimmick, but the stage felt awkward on the first couple playthroughs so I can see why people generally don't like it. >>12629723 >one of the million Western sidescrollers with big boring maze levels After replaying Bubsy 1 a bunch over the last week, I've realized it has better level design than most other Western platformers from the era. Because it avoids that issue. The enemy placement is stupid and there's lots of cheap deaths, some blind jumps. But you can tell they put some thought into it. It follows the basic Sonic formula of going left-to-right with high and low paths for most of the levels. There are also a good amount of secrets, which are well placed.
You appreciate that aspect more after memorizing the enemy placements and what not to avoid cheap deaths. It's actually a very fun game on replays, some levels let you run through them very fast too. It's a solid 7/10. There's a great game buried underneath the flaws, if they built on it and executed some things better. Sadly 2 and Fractured Furry Tales fell into the maze trap, instead of even trying to build on the good aspects of Bubsy 1.
Tying this all back into Wacky Workbench - People generally judge levels based on their initial impressions, rather than how they feel after multiple replays. So maybe Wacky Workbench gets more hate than it deserves. I remember enjoying it more on replays, but I'll have to replay Sonic CD again to see how I feel about it.

>>12629652(OP) Probably the biggest retard filter in the franchise. The floor forces you to actually thoughtfully engage with the game instead of rushing ahead, like lava gaps in Marble Zone, except without boring waiting for platforms.

I found myself replaying the Past version as a kid a lot. I really liked the music and the western desert background.

>>12631371 Whilst that's true, it doesn't stop the level being an exercise in frustration. There's way too many moving platforms with too small of a foothold for both their speed and their range of movement, accounting for your field of view.
>>12629652(OP) Was it supposed to be a reference to Amiga?

At what point does CD fall off? I remember years ago playing up to the first "race" with Metal and finding the jank to be too much. I replayed from the beginning last night through the first Eggman fight and the following stage and was having fun.

>>12629669 It always reminded me of a stage set in a Home Depot or big box warehouse store, especially with the big lights at the highest level.
