Also bizarrely Nishiyama says the hadokuen was based off of a spaceship's cannon instead of, you know, the popular martial arts manga that came out close to SF1 where the kid cups his hands and releases energy.
So Hyakutaro could be a Dragon Ball reference instead of a Street Fighter reference, both are just as likely

There is a weird taboo in Japan about taking others works and repurposing or just in a general design. However this seems to mostly be with other Japanese works as they pretty infamously rip off tons of US and EU media sometimes wholesale copying it.
This also is part of why Japan has some of the strictest copyright laws, which also likely reinforced this taboo. Now days the internet seems to have broken it a little bit and with people like Kojima becoming legends basically built entirely off him ripping off western films.

This is all to say the Japanese are weird and being seen as a copycat is a very bad thing for someone.

When it comes to making stories you're going to have some influence from the media you've seen before. There's a big step between influence and wholesale copying, like I said before the Japanese are less clear on those distinctions unless it's foreign (they probably just never seen the originals)
