>original pedigree >best graphics plus sound >6510 has illegal opcodes which allow tricks not useful on standard 6502 It's clear that the C64 won. Apple II has a solid fanbase, IBM. Even MSX. But none have the staying power of the C64, which sees about 4-6 releases per day, still, with that going to dozens per day when a compo or demo party is happening.
Atari 8-bit is an also-ran, Spectrum used to be more popular than it is today. There are slightly over a quarter million C64 releases going by CSDB. Speccy has 150-ish thousand. Apple is much less, 30k-ish?
>>12631071 99% of all games on all systems are garbage, that's the problem with low-release systems. N64 has like three or four really good unique games. It's simply a numbers game.
With a quarter million games released so far, the C64 has the numbers to be able to make a top entry for any type of game. Heck I prefer King's Bounty to HOMM. It's literally the same game. Rebelstar is just as good as XCOM. Etc.

Just to put it in perspective - there have been more new C64 releases this week, than the Playstatino 5 has had exclusives since it came out in 2020. Just counting since Sunday.
>>12630817(OP) >best 8-bit home computer >best graphics plus sound That'd be the MSX2 and it's not even close. Largely unknown outside a few select countries, though.

the C64s most impressive shooter is Armalyte, its gorgeous and flawlessly executed. https://youtu.be/pXfq5PDt2aE?si=6HmfzsXJ2isjbydf

>>12631483 site is hosted by a retard. he doesn't understand how you can have a production site and a live site so he takes the entire server offline to do updates. this is better than the last update regime where they never updated at all and got hacked

>>12631068 that is crazy, never knew it was that complex
>>12632639 Somewhat. The MSX2 had much higher res & RAM + VRAM but slightly worse hardware sprites. The audio (slightly different built-in PSGs + the same FM synth as an addon) was largely equivalent. Same CPU. The MSX2+ added horizontal hardware scrolling.
Pretty neat machine, one of my cousins had one when I was a kid.
>>12632903 np, I had to look it up myself because I wasn't sure. Both Rebelstar and Laser Squad were great.

>>12632946 I am still tuned into King's Bounty, it's literally the same exact game as HOMM, I would even say the smaller number of units and other things, make it more balanced.

New games came out today for C64. Can't say that about most retro systems. Or the PS5 for that matter - HAH!
>>12635235 >there are 24 (twenty four) PS5 games that are exclusive to the system, that have come out since 2020 when the PS5 was introduced >today, there were twice as many C64 programs released than the entire PS5 exclusive catalog since 2020 ouch, C64 is sweeping all generations at this point

>>12635290 TI was based. If only they supported developers, who knows who would have won the computer wars. It was a 16-bit system back in the 8-bit days. Very cool stuff, flopped hard as FUCK and Commodore killed them.
>better sound Are you fucking retarded? The SIDS chip in the C64 blows the MSX2's standard Yamaha sound chip out of the fucking water.

>>12635328 Piece of shit was a 16-bit computer that could hardly compete with 8-bit contemporaries and was significantly more expensive to produce. Intellivision also had a 16-bit CPU that never saw any use again because it was just too damn early for widespread adoption of 16-bit machines.
00
Anonymous06/15/26(Mon)04:39:39
>>12635372 The computer wasn't the problem actually, it was all TI and the fact they wouldn't let third parties develop for it, they wouldn't give out info about how it all worked, etc. Oh sure when they were getting killed right near the end they tried to open it up.
Shame really, it was a good CPU and arch for the time.

Anonymous06/15/26(Mon)04:47:20
>>12635328 >>12635372 >>12635407 DRAM modules of the time only had 1-bit pointers. That means 8-bit CPUs only needed 8 RAM chips, while 16-bit CPUs needed 16 RAM chips. That's why 16-bit CPUs were avoided like a plague unless the performance or IBM compatibility justifies it.

>>12635407 >Shame really, it was a good CPU and arch for the time. it was great (and the first 16bit cpu chip i think) until the m68k was released and everyone abandoned TI processors until they shat out the TMS34010. absolute chad of a chip.
