The library is just absolutely insane,it mog every other consoles
Almost all the big franchise got their best or second best entry on PS1
-FF7 best FF -breath of fire 3 best BOF -Grandia 1 best Grandia -Suikoden 2 best Suikoden -valkyrie Profile 1 best valkyrie -Star ocean 2 best star ocean -Chrono cross best chrono -Xenogears best Xeno -DQ 7 second best DQ -Tear ring saga second best Fire emblem
I haven't played those franchises so i can't confirm but it seem like Persona 2 and Tales of eternia are extremely highly regardes and the favorites of many
Why did every japanese developer decided to go full kino during this generation?
>all dogshit that gets destroyed by the SNES/NES lineup of JRPGs Snoys will look you in the eyes and tell you with their mother's life on the line that this shit somehow looks good
>>12632845 Extremely mid game with mediocre gameplay (especially Trigger) and mid story
Oh and their also on PS1

>>12632842 >>12632845 >jealous SNES drone immediately flooding the thread LOL Anyway the answer is that the shackles of the SNES technical limitations, and the censorship of Nintendo, were both lifted and developers could suddenly make the games they always wanted to. And it was a truly golden age, with even the middling PlayStation budget JRPG entries far exceeding the buckets of RPG Maker slop that was seen on SNES. That's why the genre became so popular with the PlayStation and not the SNES.

>>12632861 I think the PS1 is just the perfect middle point where production value is high while still having a high density world
PS2 J-RPG tend to be fully 3D so you get all the problem with 3D dead space and bloatness

so what triggered the autistic console warring this time, there's like 4 threads screeching about the ps1 on the catalog.

>>12632930 Tear ring saga is a little trolling toward Nintendo but it is great i only put Thracia 776 above (Berwick saga is very different so i don't include it)
>>12632842 Yes it does. Compared to generic snes jrpg template it at least looks unique. All snes jrpg's were like rpg maker games, same in gameplay and style.
Don't know what your talking about, the encounter rate is far lower than on SNES

I'm about to start playing Chrono Trigger. What's so bad about it? Should I give another retro JRPG a go instead? Honestly, I have no idea where to start so I'm asking here.
Also, and of you play on Steam Deck?

It just doesn't stand out in anything appart from the OST (and it's sequel is even better in this regard)
Braindead and mediocre combat and mid story , 7/10 game
Are you a total virgin in terms of J-RPG ?
If it's your first time i think Dragon quest is the perfect beginning to grasp the genre, extremely fundamentals heavy, charming but not too intricate story, very well balanced generally not too hard or too easy

>>12635116 Play FF7 instead. It was many people's introduction to the genre, and it created countless lifelong fans from out of thin air. That says everything. Chrono Trigger is a meme game that people only started to talk about after FF7 popularised the genre. Cross is the better game in the series. But FF7 is the ideal starting point.

>>12635116 Theres nothing bad about it, its a perfectly fine game that still holds up to this day.
Gotcha, thanks! I might go with FF7 since I used to play it on the PSP a lot in school and have some nice memories with it.

>>12635116 >I'm about to start playing Chrono Trigger. What's so bad about it? literally nothing, its one of the most revered jrpgs ever made, what you are seeing is a dead board filled with insufferable fucking retards who don't actually play games
Played it for about two hours today. So far so good. The soundtrack is really nice and comfy. I'm playing it in Japanese so I don't know whether the dialogue lines are the same in English, but some of them are hilarious. A housewife saying "My dream is to become pregnant to my blacksmith husband!" or a castle guard saying "These things called women, I hear they like sharing gossip.". Made me chuckle.
