Red pill me on this game. I've run out of RPGs and want something to play. I remember playing this as a kid and dropped it in like an hour. All I remember is something about gay color orbs in combat. Is it worth trying again?
00
Anonymous04/26/26(Sun)17:44:34
Yes. Why did you drop it? It could not be the combat. It is easy until you hit a few walls later on. The trick is to never spam powerful attacks too much or debuff bosses when they want to buff themselves, they tend to counter with their most powerful attacks. Also try to make sure the field panel is never in the boss' favor

>>3974008 I played it after Chrono Trigger and it was just weird. Made it to some stone town and then stopped playing. The 3 different attacks with different accuracies and the element system just didn't feel fun to do. Does it get better at some point? I literally haven't touched it since I was a kid, just looking for something new to play since I've beaten almost everything else.

>>3974476 Oh yeah, if you need more personal memories for some reason - >how old are you 38, so I first played it when it was 12. I had played Chrono Trigger already and loved it. My best friend at the time, who hadn't played CT, also played it and enjoyed it (he came over to my house and we beat Miguel together, good times). On the other hand, my older brother lost interest halfway and never finished, and was disappointed in it as a sequel to CT. He didn't totally hate the game though, he was moving away from playing RPGs in general at the time, becoming more interested in his other hobbies. So there were a lot of Playstation RPGs he started but never finished around then, like Lunar 2 Eternal Blue.
But anecdotes like that are less convincing than seeing actual preserved reviews from the time.

>>3973989(OP) >Red pill me on this game. Great music, interesting setting, cool parallel world gimmick. The atmosphere is amazing, one of the best RPGs in that regard. The story itself is interesting, but the late game might disappoint you. Especially if you're a big Trigger fan, some of the connections with that game were handled controversially.
If you enjoy discovering how to collect tons of characters, you'll like that aspect. On the flip side, you might hate that so many characters don't get much development. They also all get their own "accents," which you'll either find amusing or lame. But I had a lot of fun finding new characters and messing with them, even if combat-wise most of them don't feel all that different, and some are vastly better than others. The game has a lot of optional secrets for unlocking characters and things for them. A lot of the characters have something optional to discover for them, like ultimate skills/weapons or some extra hidden story.
Some of the characters have cool gimmicks unique to them. Sprigg can transform into almost any monster in the game, Pip has a transformation mechanic where he can evolve forms. Those two are the most unique, other characters are differentiated by equipment, their stats, element grid, and abilities. I had a lot of fun with it.
>>3973989(OP) I picked it up recently and goddamn is it a gorgeous game. Pretty hard to find anything overwhelmingly negative about it so far, don't see why you wouldn't pick it up and try playing it again. Does not feel like CT sequel for me at all though, just a game loosely based on its world.

>>3974858 I wonder if they attached it to Trigger in hopes of selling more copies or if it was a genuine attempt at a sequel. Very questionable but the game stands well enough on its own
Eh, I forget all the details, it's all kinda muddled together, so anybody else is free to correct me where I'm almost certainly wrong, but if memory serves and it probably doesn't:
In essence the guy who did Xenogears was working on a new project, Radical Dreamers independently came out beside it not originally having anything to do with Xenogears guy, and Square decided to cannibalize Xenogear guy's project and to combine it with Radical Dreamers to make Chrono Cross. Xenogears guy has big dreams and a desire to create projects with a large scope, but massive hardware limitations and time constraint limitations back in the PSX days make it hard for him to realize his visions--not so much of a problem for modern day Xenoblade with bigger budgets and better tech. Cross has strong start but with such a massive scope it just doesn't have enough time for everything. So kind of like how in Xenogears the game just stops and what would've been content but was cut is then recited to you, Cross has several info dumps on the back end where NPCs explain to you what in the hell is going on and serve a similar function.
It's also why Cross features hidden character motives, secret organizations, and how gods or "god-like" entities intermingle with those elements and the people of the Earth, or in this instance El Nido.

>>3974859 Nah, Masato Kato is just batshit insane. The whole game is a weird second take of an earlier game he wrote and directed called Radical Dreamers. This was a visual novel that was only officially out on the SNES Satellaview service until the Chrono Cross remaster. That VN is also a very tangential Chrono Trigger spinoff. Story-wise, I'd argue that Radical Dreamers is the better work. It's way more self-contained and doesn't totally step on Trigger's toes like Cross does.

>>3973989(OP) >Is it worth trying again? It opens with a dream sequence. If you play the game all the way until you get to the dream sequence, and then you end the game and treat it as though it is a game that loops from the beginning to the end (the dream sequence) then it is a pretty good game.
If you play it for longer than that, the 2nd act turns into complete bullshit that doesn't matter and is full of asspulls that don't make any sense, and then at the very end of the game there is a long infodump that makes no sense at all which retcons the game into being a sequel to Chrono Trigger.

>>3974936 >which retcons the game into being a sequel to Chrono Trigger.
First of all, i love Chrono Cross so my advice may be biased. I´d say it´s one of the best JRPGs from the PS1 era even though it´s flawed. It´s probably only topped by Valkyrie Profile, FF VII to IX, Vagrant Story and maybe Saga frontier 2.
If nothing else the story and OST are fantastic.
00
Anonymous04/28/26(Tue)18:31:49
You are now picturing the alternate timeline where Xenogears was not garbage so this game was retconned into being Xeno Cross in the last 2 hours.
00
Anonymous04/29/26(Wed)00:08:35
The one negative I'll give cross for now is that the battle theme is weak as fuck. For a game with so much good music this is the one spot it misses the mark

>>3977606 Using "Twenty years after the events" for a sequel of a game purely about time travel makes this an incredibly confusing selling point. Anyway I'm excited for that lategame info dump the anons above were talking about, right now in the early/midgame if I were to remove a few lines of dialogue and rearranged some music tracks there would be no thread linking this game to its predecessor.
